2008’s Journey to the Center of the Earth and 2012’s Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.
Both are big silly fun!
Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima.
Yes, they’re about pretty much the same events from two different viewpoints, but the first two Godfather films didn’t have “one after the other” timelines either.
I wish they hadn’t made Mummy 3. Mummy 1 and 2 with Brendan Fraser were a lot of fun.
3 was…horrifyingly bad. Re-cast Rachel Weisz, had a son who looked like Fraser’s brother, and a total snoozefest of a movie.
I wish they’d never made Beverly Hills Cop 3 - it was horrible - but the first two were really good.
Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. (We won’t count the first Evil Dead.)
Spaceballs and Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money
I’m imagining the equivalent conversation being held today.
Studio executive: Your last movie did okay and we broke even with the dvd sales. So we’ve decided we want you guys to make another movie.
Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer: Great! We’ve already got the script written!
Studio executive: What? We haven’t even told you what the movie’s about.
Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer: Doesn’t matter! We’ll just change the names and use the same script!
Studio executive: Wow, I sold my soul to Satan fifteen years ago and even I’m appalled by this.
I nominate Babe and Babe: Pig in the City. Lovely, funny, wonderful movies. Hard to believe that they were directed by the same man who directed the Mad Max movies (which are wonderful, but not very lovely or funny).
House
and
The greatest sequel name ever…
House II: The Second Story

King Kong (Fay Wray) and Son of Kong
McHale’s Navy and McHale’s Navy Joins the Air Force.
That’s a very respectable choice.
Nanny McPhee and Nanny McPhee Returns (aka Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang).
Grease and Grease 2?!
Without looking at the list, I will go with
Stakeout
Another Stakeout
Both are pretty good… The first one was better, but even with Rosie O’Donnell doing her best to drag down the second one, I can still watch it and laugh. Dennis Farina is one of my favorite character actors, especially when he’s playing for laughs. (His deadpan mobster in Midnight Run is a classic).
If there is a 3rd in this series, I don’t know it… And I don’t want to know it.
Blues Brothers and Blues Brothers 2000. Admittedly the 2nd one sucked, but it still had a kick ass soundtrack.
The two Doctor Who films with Peter Cushing.
I would have to go with King Kong and Son of Kong also.
