Count my vote for Memento as well. I also really enjoyed The Others, and Mulholland Drive. I was vaguely disappointed with most of the others mentioned, though I have yet to see Ghost World, Amelie, Hedwig, or Waking Life. From what I hear, I expect to like all of those.
I did not like Shrek much, and Moulin Rouge was almost there, but didn’t quite make it for me. The Gift was OK, The Pledge was a spectacular misfire, with moments of brilliance but no coherence.
If Memento qualifies as a 2001 film, then it has to be a real contender, in my view. I also thought Ghost World was excellent.
One film that hasn’t been mentioned, and which i really liked a lot, is Panic with William H. Macy, Neve Campbell, and Donald Sutherland. It’s a really interesting psychological drama/suspense thriller (or whatever you want to call it), and the cast all give really good performances. I believe it has now come out on DVD/video.
I’ve seen some pretty sorry movies this year. Sorry sorry sorry. Since I have a girlfriend that likes to go to the movies and had a roomate that liked to download movies that were still in the theatre, I think I’ve seen nearly every major theatrical release this year and I can sum most of them up with one word: Junk. If I had to pick a movie I guess I would say Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, mostly because I’m a HUGE Kevin Smith fan. But, while JSBSB was good (and it grows on me a little more each time I see it), I still think it was his worst work to date. Shrek was good, but not great.
Hopefully I will be able to say how awesomely great FotR is here in a few days. Hopefully.
