Best movie of the last 3 years? 2014-2016

I like to restrict time down like that and see what people will say? What is the best complete movie from the last 3 calendar years? Yes, you can name a few, but try to pick your top.

I’d honestly say:

Mad Max Fury Road - rewatched it again this weekend on Blu-ray. It’s the greatest action movie ever made and is also my favorite score from the past 3 years. It should have won the Oscar for Best Picture.

Honorable Mentions:
**
Queen of the Desert** - Herzog’s overlooked masterpiece. Nicole Kidman should have won an Oscar, as should Herzog and his cinematographer. Loved it. Watched it twice in a week.

What We Do in the Shadows - the best comedy of the last 3 years by a mile. I laugh just thinking about it.

Honorable Honorable mention:

Star Wars Episode VII - While not in the top group, this movie deserves even more credit than it was given at release. Making an Episode VII was so daunting, I can’t believe they even came close to matching the originals. So much riding on it, I know I’d crack under pressure.

You guys?

Mad Max: Fury Road is by far the best movie I’ve seen in the past few years. It’s also the best action movie ever made, bar none; nothing else even comes close. I agree it should have won the Oscar for Best Picture last spring.

I’m on The Mad Max Fury Road train as well.

I don’t know about Star Wars. I liked it enough to watch it enough times to realize I hate it, if that makes any sense.

Under The Skin, Anomalisa, Paddington, What We Do In The Shadows, The Martian, John Wick, Brooklyn, '71, The Big Short, Inside Out. I rate all of these very highly.

Really didn’t care for Fury Road at all.

Boyhood. By a lot. Giving the Best Picture to Oscar to Birdman instead was a Grade-A travesty.

I only found Boyhood to be OK.

Probably Captain America Winter Solider.

Mad Max was definitely the most fun I’ve had watching a movie that I can remember: I found myself laughing almost constantly at the zany bloody chutzpah of everyone involved. It was glorious. I don’t know if it’s the best, but it was goddamn glorious.

Mad Max Fury Road
The Martian
Deadpool
Kubo and the Two Strings

Count me in on the Mad Max love.

Another good action film is Edge of Tomorrow (aka Live, Die, Repeat)

I quite liked Bridge of Spies and Brooklyn, too.

What? No “Guardians of the Galaxy”? "Grand Budapest Hotel "?

Off the top of my head
Mr. Holmes
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Inside Out
The Book of Life

Kingsman: The Secret Service is probably the movie I enjoyed the most, dunno if it’s the best though.

GotG was great fun, but lacked a certain je ne said quoi that would have elevated it to the “amazing” category.

TGBH lacked, um, nearly everything, IMO. I know I’m prolly in the minority, but Wes Anderson’s films appeal to me like Tim Burton’s films appeal to me: they have an interesting visual style, but that’s it.

2014: John Wick
2015: The Martian
2016: Deadpool

Overall, Deadpool. I’ve not laughed that hard in a movie theater for a while.

Ex Machina
My personal favorites are another matter. My top four from the past three years, in order:

Coherence
Horns
Spring
These Final Hours

I liked Sicario quite a lot, but I readily admit I haven’t seen most of the movies on everyone’s lists.

Any love for Interstellar?

John Wick was an hour and a half modern dance routine with firearms. Beautiful fight choreography though, and I’ll probably make time to see the second one in theaters. And Keanu Reeves in real life is about as good with a gun as he looks in that movie.

+1 for Mad Max!

I also like Interstellar - great one! watched 5 times…always find something new for myself…

It ain’t gonna win the popular vote, but my personal favorite film of the past three years by a WIDE margin is A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night.

The director is on track for becoming one of my favorite directors as well. The was her debut feature film but I just recently saw her second film The Bad Batch at a film festival and it was also quite excellent. It will be officially released sometime in 2017. I’ll be watching her career quite closely.

I loved The Martian and also really enjoyed:

Birdman

American Sniper

but my favorite :

Whiplash

Nothing else that I’ve seen even comes close.
