Ghost Reveries by Opeth
The Moor, opening track to the album Still Life, is about a “heretic” who is exiled from his village (some unspecified little puritanical community i think) and loses his love.
Face Of Melinda, from the same album, this is where our exiled man approaches his long lost love to find she has become a nun in his absence. Shows the scary dude roaring for most of the previous song can also sing.
Ok neither of these songs are from Ghost Reveries even though that was my initial recommendation… i just think these are a bit better first coming into Opeth. (advice: yes these are abit long, even if the growl turns you off, give the whole songs a chance to absorb)

Queen - Innuendo
Innuendo Great song --keep an ear out for Steve Howe’s amazing guest appearance as the traveling gypsy guitar dude.
Freddie visibly unwell and still putting on his best show–the whole things got such a melancholy undercurrent and intentional or not its moving. great song as well.
The Show Must Go On Powerful in the way only Freddie ever was. He really gave it all for his last great performance.

Radiohead - OK Computer
No Surprises–great video. For some reason this song really has a powerful effect on me. Life insurance policy makers would do well to look into whether their customers listen to this song.
One day, I am gonna grow wings… overwhelming sadness and beauty–rush of nostalgia i get with this song is enough to make me sit down if i happen to be standing.

Sublime
A New Song about Brad and his heroin addiction–one of their best.
STP hey another song about his addiction
and another. this one makes me really very sad
Superstar Punani–i think of this as the really sped up ska version of have a cigar.

ok thats enough for one post–if you like any of what you hear i’ve got TONS (10,000 songs worth) more recommendations.

cheers

Ween. Pure Guava. “Don’t Get 2 Close 2 my Fantasy” may be the greatest song that ever lived. Yes.

Wow. I just checked out some of their stuff on Seeqpod; it’s exactly as you describe. Spooky, melancholy, dusty, and easy to become completely absorbed in. Pinetop Seven is now one of my favorite bands.

Magiver, thanks for your reply. I was fortunate to see both artists live; Hedges in a high school auditorium. That dance he did hopping with knees bent on alternate legs while tapping was almost as riveting as Hendrix. I read an interview with him discussing future work where he said he’d like to do some Hendrix and I wondered whether he ever did.
