Best Order to Board an Airplane?

That would suck in bad weather to say nothing of the huge security concern letting the unwashed masses out on the tarmac creates. I’m the type oooh, lemme check out that other plane…& then the one two more gates down after that; hmmm, can I manually work those stairs.

In Sint Maarten they deplane and board via stairs on the tarmac, but you are immediately herded onto buses that take you 25-100 yards from the plane to the airport or airport to plane.

Yeah that’s pretty standard at a lot of airports. I couldn’t even tell you specifically as I don’t notice it as odd, but in my years of flying around Europe and elsewhere, terminal to bus to plane was normal.

recently, an idiot Southwest flight attendant moved my luggage from the overhead bin above my seat to three rows back, so “things could fit better”. When I asked how was I supposed to get my luggage at flights end without fighting the people seated behind me moving forward I got a dirty look. There’s no winning regardless or methodology.

Once on a flight from Bucharest to Paris on Air France, I boarded the plane and found a man sitting in my window seat. His actual seat was the middle seat. Turns out he was disabled both physically and mentally, so once he was put in (my) seat by the attendants, he was unable to move, unable to talk, apparently unable to understand anything anybody said to him. The flight attendants told me to take the middle seat, as there was no way he was going to move. He whimpered the whole flight. A memorable one. I think he had caretakers elsewhere on the plane.

On another occasion I was flying from Prague to Budapest and there was a guy in my seat. He was huge, and didn’t speak any English. He pointed to his aisle seat and gestured that I should take it. I did, reluctantly. We couldn’t speak and he looked like he was willing and able to beat me up if I didn’t do what he wanted.

The practical answer of course is you wait as the three rows behind you clear out then you work your way back to your bag, get it down, & deplane from there.

Which a couple dozen people are forced to do on every single flight when they get aboard and the closest bin with open space is behind their row.

What you actually meant was

You moving my luggage is inconveniencing me. Please inconvenience someone else instead. Including the person whose bag won’t fit and would otherwise need to be checked.

And her impolitic reaction was

I’m going to inconvenience some specific somebody slightly now so we can leave sooner and avoid inconveniencing 150 somebodies including you in a different way by being late. By luck your bag is the most convenient bag to move so we don’t take a delay checking this bag that won’t fit the way the bins are (inefficiently) loaded now.

Sucks to be you on this flight. It’ll suck for somebody else on your next flight. This is a group effort and everyone needs to remember that and give a little, not just take a bunch. Southwest; it’s all about the Luv.

It’s hard to believe, but I’ve actually had a stewardess ask to take our carry-on out and place at my feet so they could put someone else’s bag up in the bin. Sorry, I have bad knees and that’s why I have it up there. (That’s my story and I’m sticking to it…) Maybe I’ll hop and dance a bit while leaving the aircarft when the flight is over.

The “new” airport was built in 1971! However, the old terminal is still in use as offices for the TSA and for the lost and found. Tours can be arranged if you’re ever in town and would like to indulge in a little nostalgia.

It was that long ago? I’m talking about the one with all the Native American imagery/designs.

Which is a neat trick if there’s 15 rows worth of people back there all moving forward to block your attempt to move to the rear, and waiting for the entire back end of the flight to deplane causes you to risk missing a connection.

I’ve never done the “gate lice” thing, but I can’t imagine worrying about unflattering terms airline employees use to show their contempt for passengers.

Well, sure, I mean, if it were United they’d just give you a beatdown.

That’s the one! It’s Territorial style architecture, with the huge roof beams and whitewashed walls (I don’t know if they’re actually adobe, but that’s the impression). The “new” terminal has been remodeled several times, but you can see the bones of the original as well, and we still have a world-class art collection on display.

I’m so glad to hear it’s still there…even if it’s been remodelled somewhat. I had a three hour layover, and I wasn’t bored at all.

Just to clarify - because they were on after the bins filled up and their bag did not fit properly under the seat.

That’s standard practice here. If a flight is full then passengers with bags that fit under the seat are asked to put them there so that the bags that don’t can be put in the overheads.

Ow, my knees. Can I get a tylenol, miss?

Why would they make underseat storage smaller than carry-on size? My backpack is up there protected by my small carry-on because I have two boxes of Krispy Kremes that can’t get squashed or overheated.

(I had one Airport Security tell me that the Krispy Kremes were considered too liquid to be allowed on board and they would have to dispose of them at her screening station. She said it with such a straight face before she started laughing a few seconds later.)

Why wouldn’t they? The bins are for standard carry on, the underseat is for your laptop bag / handbag / whatever. On a full flight it makes sense to keep the overheads free for larger bags. If you want to make sure you can have some legroom, fly with an airline that lets you select an exit row seat.

Yes, they are only $70 extra per leg of your trip…

Is that to fly with such an airline or to select the seat? Either way, you have to work out what your priorities are.
