Hi, this question is for a friend who doesn’t belong to the SDMB…
My friend is a professional twenty-something black female looking to move to the Maryland area. Her only requirements are that the cities / counties suggested are not Baltimore or D.C. She wants somewhere with a vibrant mixed community, it doesn’t have to be primarily black or minority but she’d like to:
"see people that look like her on a regular day to day basis."
She’s also single, so she wants somewhere that’s fun with a good singles scene. Basically a place where there is a good mix of young professionals from all racial backgrounds, but with a decent black presence within the middle class / white collar population. Thanks!!!
Just how far does she have to be from D.C. or Baltimore? She does realize that 5/6 of Maryland (by population) is in the Washington-Baltimore Metropolitan Area, doesn’t she? Does she mean just that she doesn’t want to live in the cities of Baltimore or Washington, D.C., or does she mean that she doesn’t want to live in their metropolitan areas?
Sorry for the confusion, she just doesn’t want to live in d.c. or baltimore proper, metro areas outside of it are fine
Large amounts of Prince George’s County consist of well-off suburbs with majority black populations.
I admit though that I don’t understand why she wouldn’t want to live in the cities themselves but is willing to live just outside them in the suburbs. There’s really no significant difference.
Does she want to be closer to DC or Baltimore?
I was going to suggest Takoma Park or Bowie. Been a while since I lived in DC, but I think both areas have a reasonably diverse population with a fair amount of middle and upper middle class residents. Takoma Park would afford an esier commute to the district but I think the crime is a little higher that it would be on Bowie. My boss lived in Takoma Park and I thought her neighborhood was very pleasant.
