Best Rolling Stones album?

Huh? If anyone said the Rolling Stones didn’t rock ‘n’ roll, I’d ask 'em what life was like on their home planet.

I’ve got a big soft spot for Their Satanic Majesties Request. Maybe not their best, and certainly their most out of character, but a criminally underrated example of British high psychedelia. You really can’t go wrong with anything from Aftermath through Exile. If I really had to choose just one I think it would be Beggars Banquet.

Yeah, me too. Beggar’s Banquet fits in the ‘Top 10 LPs of all time’ world for me.

Parachute Woman is brilliant. The first time I heard that I saw heaven in vinyl.

Is “Dandelion” on Satanic Majesty’s Request?

I’ve got me a powerf’l urge to hear “Dandelion” again (talk about British high psychedelia!) and I’d hate to invest in a whole disc of single releases.

Apparently not.

I’ve been partial to She’s a Rainbow ever since a wonderful day in 1969 when I heard the track through a window pane.

I’ll second Some Girls just because I’m too lazy to think of one by myself. Gotta love a girl with far-away eyes. And gospel-music radio.

Exile On Main Street, although my favorite song, Gimme Shelter, is on Let It Bleed.

I’ll probably catch some shit for this, but isn’t Tattoo You the most overrated Stones album? If there’s one popular Stones album that I don’t care if I ever hear again, it’s definitely Tattoo You.

What exatcly does this record contribute to their legacy? Start Me Up is just a low rent Brown Sugar. Waiting On A Friend is pure sugar. Hang Fire is a good tune, but after these three, what’s left on this record?

Gotta go with Sticky Fingers. I think Exile on Main Street is overrated, although still excellent.

But look at these songs on Sticky Fingers:

Wild Horses
Dead Flowers
Sister Morphine
Brown Sugar

Great, great songs.

In case you’re wondering, here’s the song list for Some Girls:

  1. Miss You
  2. When the Whip Comes Down
  3. Just My Imagination
  4. Some Girls
  5. Lies
  6. Far Away Eyes
  7. Respectable
  8. Before They Make Me Run
  9. Beast of Burden
  10. Shattered

Well, I’ve had a weekend to listen to all of these CDs.

It is easy to pick the worst ones:

Emotional Rescue

Black and Blue

Pick the best ones? Hmmm…I think I will listen to Aftermath, Beggar’s Banquet, Let it Bleed, Undercover, December’s Children, Tattoo You, and Get Your Ya Ya’s before I decide.

I vote for Let it Bleed. There are 9 songs on this album and all 9 are winners. Of the 9 great songs at least 3 (Gimme Shelter, You Can’t Always Get What You Want and Monkey Man) are among their best songs ever and Love in Vain and You Got The Silver are also up there.
Beggars Banquet, Sticky Fingers and Aftermath are close seconds. Never could really care about Exile. Tatoo and Some Girls are nice but very uneven.

Sticky Fingers. Oh yes. I can’t really explain why, but it’s just perfect.

Overrated? I was under the impression that it wasn’t highly regarded by anyone.

The Stones of the late '60s was a rock group at it’s peak, IMHO. That gives you a list of: Beggar’s Banquet, Let It Bleed, & Sticky Fingers. Beggar’s Banquet tops the list for me. Throw in Aftermath as well!
I’ve always had a soft spot for their wierd little album Between the Buttons.

My favorite album, and those aren’t even the best songs! Which are:

Can’t you Hear Me Knocking
Bitch
Sway
I Got the Blues
and then Brown Sugar, Wild Horses…I even like “You Gotta Moo”. I usually skip over Sister Morphine. But 8 out of 9 ain’t bad.

I just got Exile recently…a Stones fan for 40 years, and I’d never heard “Rip This Joint” in my life (how’d that happen?). WHAT A GREAT SONG!!

I used to have this album on cassette, but somehow never got it on CD. I’ll need to run out and do that today. I think the only song I don’t love on this album is Miss You. I just love their version of Just My Imagination. And I really love Far Away Eyes, too (you know what kinda eyes she got).

I was going to vote for Goats Head Soup, but I guess this list has changed that.

Does GHS have “It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (but I like it)”? One of the best Rock Anthems of all time (although that wasn’t the question in the OP).

On the greatest hits collection “Hot Rocks” there’s a great live version of “Midnight Rambler”. Was this originally from YaYa’s?

Another remarkable SDMB coincidence thread.

At work last week someone started a conversation about “The best album ever”. I said that my favourite wouldn’t even be voted the best by that band by most people and named “Aftermath”. All Jagger/Richards and the first time they decided to stop sounding like the “naughty” Beatles."

It is pleasing to see I am not as alone as I thought.

It’s only Rock and Roll is on the* It’s only Rock and Roll* album!

That certainly calls for a :smack:
