I love Some Girls. Here’s my well-thought-out critique. . .
That was when they decided to be the Kinks for one album. Great results, though!
I always find it interesting that people who love early 70s Stones songs don’t like Tattoo You. Almost all of the songs on Tattoo You were originally recorded during the early to mid 70s.
To my understanding, that is true - while I think the Tattoo You songs are fine, they seem a little more “poppy” than the stuff off the earlier albums - I’m So Hot for Here, Start Me Up, Hang Fire - they all seem, I dunno, less substantial than the big hits off the other albums…
While any other band would love to have songs like those, I wasn’t surprised when I found out that many of these songs were cast-offs from the earlier stuff…
“She’s So Cold” is on “Emotional Rescue,” so we can discount that.
“Tattoo You” has “Waiting on A Friend,” with Sonny Rollins, and that, to me, makes up for “Hang Fire.”
She’s so Cold - ooops. :smack:
And I studiously avoided “Waiting on a Friend” for that very reason, sir. You could not be more right - great song.
To me it is more about putting Start Me Up against, say, Brown Sugar or Gimme Shelter as a first single. Or matching Little T&A up against Happy or Before They Make Me Run. And the lack of a Can’t You Hear Me Knocking exploration of bluesy goodness…
I did not know this. It explains why I consider Tattoo You the last good (albeit not great) Stones album.
Another vote for Exile as Best Ever, though I should mention my favorite compilation album (thus far unmentioned): Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass)
Another vote for Beggars Banquet. For some reason “Prodigal Son” is my second favorite Stones’ song, after “Tumbling Dice.” But I really love that album – “Dear Doctor”, “Street Fightin’ Man”, “Parachute Woman”, “Factory Girl”, and of course “Sympathy” are all winners.
Second would be Sticky Fingers, then Exile on Main Street (although they are really close). I think after that would be Goat’s Head Soup. I don’t really care for Aftermath because of the song “Stupid Girl” which kind of ruins the album for me, although it is redeemed by sitar work on “Paint it Black”, which in my book is a huge plus for any album.
I’d have to agree with you. It may not be their best, but it is definitely the last great album they recorded.
