Best single lines in rock lyrics

Yeah that’s right up there with:

Woke up this mornin,

Best for the current situation:

Oh my
Life has passed me by
The country I was brought up in
Fell apart and died

Chicago, Lowdown

America where are you now?
Don’t you care about your sons and daughters?
Don’t you know we need you now
We can’t fight alone against the monster

Steppenwolf, Monster

That brought to mind a Jenny Lewis line:

“Because you are what you love, and not what loves you back”

Dang, gonna have to listen to that a few times in a row now.

Alternately:

Bike by Sid Barret

“I’ve got a bike, you can ride it if you like” is the ultimate love song.

And, whilst really Ken Graham’s not Floyds, “Piper at the Gates of Dawn” is a wonderful evocative image

Which brings up a worthy addition here:

Woke up this morning, put on my slippers, walked in the kitchen and died.

John Prine, Please Don’t Bury Me

Listening to you I get the music
Gazing at you I get the heat
Following you I climb the mountain
I get excitement at your feet

  • The Who

Which brings up a worthy addition here:

Woke up this morning, put on my slippers, walked in the kitchen and died.

John Prine, Please Don’t Bury Me

Which brings up Hendrix’s Woke up this morning and found myself dead

Yes. The entire reason I mentioned “Woke up this mornin” is that it is such a cliched first line that it is a running joke.

Heck, the song @Dr.Winston_OBoogie mentioned isn’t even the only John Prine song that starts with that line.

There are entire reddit threads devoted to songs that start with that line. There must be hundreds.

*And you’re not worshiping me,
you’re worshipping yourself
And you will kill in my name and heaven knows what else
When you can’t prove I exist,
so get over yourself

“God Said”/Todd Rundgren

You may have got your silver, but I swear upon my life;
Your sister gave me diamonds, and I gave 'em to your wife.

Dire Straits - The Man’s Too Strong

Also from Pink Floyd:

One day you find ten years have got behind you. No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

Cold Chisel - Bow River

‘The money I save won’t buy my youth again’

This always gets me…

And I wanna rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old

“Into The Mystic” - Van Morrison

And magnificently we will fall
Into the mystic

(from the live version on “It’s Too Late To Stop Now”)

I had it on Moondance. I think he said the rhyming version.

“And magnificently we will fold”

Did he sometimes say “float?”

It can also be “fold”, maybe I misheard.

Maybe he is one of those guys who would change it up. Fall, float, fold…who knows?

As someone who has had my words misrepresented in the past:

You took my word and pounded away
And wrote in the sand that you felt the same

Around The Block Again, by Drivin’ N’ Cryin’

I am reevaluating the Beatles. Some good single lines…

Sont les mots qui vont très bien ensembles

Man I was mean but I’m changing my scene

You may be a lover but you ain’t no dancer

I’ve got no car and it’s breaking my heart
But I’ve found a driver and that’s a start

He blew his mind out in a car
He didn’t notice that the lights had changed

Show me round your snow packed mountains way down south

For well you know that it’s a fool who plays it cool by making his world a little colder

You’re such a lovely audience we’d like to take you home with us… we’d love to take you home

Dear Sir or Madam will you read my book?

Sail the ship. Chop the tree. Skip the rope.
Look at me.

Some kind of innocence that’s measured out in years

Out of college money spent.
See no future pay no rent

When I think of all the times I tried to leave her
She will turn to me and start to cry
And she promises me the world to me, and I believe her
After all this time I don’t know why
