I’m getting ready to move to DC, and I’m just looking for the best sites/blogs to keep up with events (concerts, arts, performances), happenings (changes in transit system, weather, etc.).
No politics. Got plenty of those.
I just want to keep up with life in DC, knowing what’s going on.
The calendar of book signings in the Washington area for the next week from the Sunday edition of The Washington Post. The URL for this changes each week. Put “Washington Area Literary Calendar” and “June 22” (or whatever the date is for the Monday of the week) into Google. Do this on Sunday and you’ll get the signings starting the next day.
Yeah, O.K., this is what’s important to me. Sorry if it isn’t important to you.
washingtoncitypaper.com – or better yet, get your hands on it in print free weekly once you get here. Indeed, as a new transplant, you’re the ideal audience for the City Paper; it’s very useful in terms of getting yourself acclimated to the cultural and (local) political landscape, and since you haven’t lived here previously, you won’t constantly shake your head over how much better it was before the new format.
Also the aforementioned DCist is very good.
However – as is clear from the OP, you already know to call it D.C., not “Washington.” That’s the most important first step.
Greater Greater Washington is a good place to start learning about different neighborhoods and the city’s transit system, but the only events you’ll find on there are WMATA board meetings, etc. I mean, hey, if that’s your idea of a good time…
Well, that is a part of it. Admittedly, I’ve actually read very few of the posts from GGW that have come up. Not because I’m not interested in learning about these areas, just because due to time constraints, I have to choose wisely what I read.
