Best sites to keep up with Washington, DC events/happenings/news...

I’m getting ready to move to DC, and I’m just looking for the best sites/blogs to keep up with events (concerts, arts, performances), happenings (changes in transit system, weather, etc.).

No politics. Got plenty of those.

I just want to keep up with life in DC, knowing what’s going on.

DCist blog

And of course The Washington Post. It has some sections and blogs dedicated to entertainment & happenings such as the Going Out Gurus.

Also try On Tap DC

Todd Kliman’s weekly chat on restaurants in the Washington area:

http://www.washingtonian.com/chats/kliman/index.html

The calendar of book signings in the Washington area for the next week from the Sunday edition of The Washington Post. The URL for this changes each week. Put “Washington Area Literary Calendar” and “June 22” (or whatever the date is for the Monday of the week) into Google. Do this on Sunday and you’ll get the signings starting the next day.

Yeah, O.K., this is what’s important to me. Sorry if it isn’t important to you.

washingtoncitypaper.com – or better yet, get your hands on it in print free weekly once you get here. Indeed, as a new transplant, you’re the ideal audience for the City Paper; it’s very useful in terms of getting yourself acclimated to the cultural and (local) political landscape, and since you haven’t lived here previously, you won’t constantly shake your head over how much better it was before the new format.

Also the aforementioned DCist is very good.

However – as is clear from the OP, you already know to call it D.C., not “Washington.” That’s the most important first step.

Thanks for the suggestions y’all.

I’ve actually been reading DCist for a couple of weeks now. I’ve got it in my RSS reader. I also started getting the City Paper emailed to me.

I’ve also been trying out Greater Greater Washington and Washington Kaleidoscope. Any other blogs y’all like, please send 'em my way.

Cliffy, if I do have to say the W-word, should I not say “Warshington”?

No, the pronunciation with the “r” isn’t standard in this area.

Greater Greater Washington is a good place to start learning about different neighborhoods and the city’s transit system, but the only events you’ll find on there are WMATA board meetings, etc. I mean, hey, if that’s your idea of a good time…

Well, that is a part of it. Admittedly, I’ve actually read very few of the posts from GGW that have come up. Not because I’m not interested in learning about these areas, just because due to time constraints, I have to choose wisely what I read.

Also, any of y’all read weloveDC.com?

I second the Going Out Gurus recommendation.

Thanks for the welovedc link…never seen that one.

I also get Daily Candy DC, though it’s more fashion-centric/girly than I care for.

My pleasure…
