You are not alone. I miss Surge too.
And whoever was asking about Fresca. It is available in Northern California as well
Had some at a restaurant last Sunday. Everyone drinks Cherry Coke!
I also miss Surge and Pepsi Blue.
I don’t know if the still make Baumeister Root Beer any more. I haven’t had it for years. That, and Spring Time flavored sodas. They came in little 8 ounce bottles. Just enough to hit the spot.
For those of you who never had it Birch Beer is kind of an aquired taste. Hard to describe, really. It has kind of a slight peppermint aroma. It’s sort of like a mixture of Root Beer and Pepto Bismol. It’s thick and red, like transmission fluid. I love the stuff, especially HANKS and SOUIX CITY BIRCH. But I’ve never seen it in any store.
I have to go into this speciality liqour store to buy it.
Rondo.
Pineapple Crush. I’m sure as an adult it would be gross - but it was great when I was seventeen.
(I remember Diet Grapefruit Rondo brought to a party as a sacrificial offering, but I don’t think anyone actually drank it).
Oh My GOD… I haven’t thought about the Pop Shoppe in years… Used to love going there with my parents and picking out a case of all different kinds of pop…
Thanks for that great article… Brought back memories…

I guess I’m the only one who misses Mountain Dew: Code Red.
Even though it was only around for bit, and only disappeared last year, it was the only thing with cherry flavour in it that I enjoyed.
Code Red is still around where I live. Actually I didn’t even know it was discontinued anywhere else.
And yes, it is scrum-diddly-umptious. And I don’t even like the original Mountain Dew.
Lessee…
Mountain Dew Code Red: here.
Cherry Coca-Cola: In the fountain at the chow hall here.
New York Seltzer: Man, it’s been a long time. Good stuff, and dearly missed.
It’s still available. In fact, I had a couple of bottles afew months ago.
You sure that wasn’t Cheerwine. You just basically described it’s basic properties. They are still making it, but it is only sold in the deep south, GA and SC.
And yet another vote for New York Seltzer, especially the Root Beer flavor. Mmm.
We have Mountain Dew Code Red up here in MN and last summer another Mountain Dew flavor that’s orange came out “just for the summer”. I drank like it was going out of style, because, well, it was “only for the summer”. I was sad to see it go but I was stocked until December with it. Turns out it’s come back for this summer too so I’m happy even if I’m getting jerked around.
In the early 80s, 7-UP introduced Like Cola. The ad campaign featured the same bald African-American guy with the big, deep voice (Jeffrey something?) that played for so long in the regular 7-UP commercials. He would hold up a cola nut and say this is a cola nut, etc. etc., but Like has no caffeine! This was before caffeine-free Coke, and this was Like’s niche.
Like tasted pretty good, actually. I remember having it several times. I don’t know why they discontinued it–probably didn’t sell. Anyone here have any Like Cola memories?
I had some not too long ago, and as far as I know it’s still in stores around here. If it has disappeared, it’s only been in the last couple of months, and I haven’t looked for it and not found it.
Is Mr. Green soda still available anywhere?
I’m surprised by the lack of mention of:
Crystal Pepsi My son loved that stuff. I don’t think it ever went nationwide, we were part of a test market and evidently it didn’t do that well.
CocaCola Yes, CocaCola. What is sold now is “Coke Classic”- but the flagship brand was reformulated many years ago and is now impossible to find, at least around here.
Homeboy Soda. Has ANYONE ever heard of this? My local Amoco used to sell it back around 1993. It had about 8 different flavors and was soooo good, and was only 50 cents for a BOTTLE. By 1994, it was gone though…
and to follow up on a couple of things -
I cried the day when I realized I was never going to get to drink another can of Surge
I don’t understand how anybody can actually enjoy the tastes of Fresca and Moxie. Those are the two most hidious drinks I have ever had the displeasure of tasting.
Schweppes Bitter Lemon is no longer available in my neck of the woods.
Used to love it mixed with rum. Mmmmmmmm.
When I was a kid in southeast Texas, we had a drink called Grapette. It was sold in TINY bottles(about 6 ounces I think). Rumor had it though that it had alcohol in it!
I haven’t seen it around since the early 60’s though.
Interesting. I almost said
except that I didn’t want to admit I drink rum & coke (so college, and I’m 53). But then, I drink it with a lot of lime, in which case it’s a Cuba Libre, which is still okay, I think. If not, the Texas Chili Parlor in Austin makes big ones they call a Magnum, which is definitely cool. And I have to admit that Coke goes better with rum than Pepsi.
Followup for Motorgirl: in Shop & Save tonight, the Ruby Red Squirt was in its usual place (both 2-liter bottles and 12-packs of cans).
