Best Song Lyric Poetry

I’m starting this thread because I was listening to “#41” by Dave Matthews and it occured to me how good the words were and how well they work, even on their own. I know there are a lot of other songs that would work as poems, and that a lot of really great song lyrics don’t stand alone well at all.

Give your favorite passages or entire songs or whatever.

I’m thinking that some Simon and Garfunkel stuff could work as PROSE standing alone. Anything off of The Doors’ “An American Prayer” is an obvious choice, as is anything by Free Word Band. I’m not disqualifying either, mind you, just saying.

Here are the lyrics to “#41”. It’s a damn fine song, too. Especially the Acoustic version from “Live at Luther College”. That entire CD is great stuff, IMHO. Excellent music for laid-back times, most certainly, and the stripped-down acoustic versions of the songs bring out DM’s severely underappreciated lyrics.

Well, now that I’ve droned on for far too long, let’s hear yours!

Bob Dylan.

(Funnily enough, I have “Hurricane” playing now…)

Dylan’s OK, but I’ll raise you one Neil Peart, and one Derek William Dick, better known as Fish - formery of Marillion fame.

I love this song (Green Earrings), the album (The Royal Scam) and the band (Steely Dan)

The lyrics even look cool. I’ve tried to reproduce the center-justification of the album sleeve.

       Cold, daring
      No flies on me
        Sorry, angel
I must take what I see

     Green earrings
       I remember
The rings of rare design
       I remember
  The look in your eyes
       I don't mind

       Greek medallion
  Sparkles when you smile
         Sorry, angel
I get hungry like a child

     Green earrings
        I remember
The rings of rare design
        I remember
  The look in your eyes
        I don't mind
