Best Steak Restaurants

I’ve been to Peter Luger’s and I found my steak to be just good, but not great. I’ve had better steaks. Maybe it was just an off night or something so I’m willing to give it another go if I’m in that area again.

I’m not terribly experienced in this regard, but I’ve been to Smith and Wollensky’s in NYC and a couple different Ruth’s Chris locations. For my money, Harris’s in San Francisco is far better than either of them. I’m generally a rip 'n tear eater who wolfs down his food. The first bite of my steak at Harris’s stopped me in my tracks…

Man. I’m hungry.

In the great Southwest, there is no beating the Cattleman’s Steakhouse at Indian Cliffs Ranch. It’s out in the middle of nowhere. You have to drive more than 30 miles out of El Paso and take an almost unlabeled freeway exit to get there, and yet it’s always busy, even though the place is huge.

Their top seller is The Cowboy, a 2 pound T-bone, cooked any way you want it.

Aside from the restaurant, the place is (as its name implies) a working ranch, and has hayrides and other such activities. It was also the site that filled in nicely for the Iraqi desert in the movie Courage Under Fire.

I wonder if it is affiliated with Cattlemen’s in Ft. Worth? I’ve never ate there but my husband did and loved it.

Seeing as the one in Fabens (outside of El Paso) is Cattleman’s Steakhouse and the one in Fort Worth is Cattlemen’s Steakhouse…and that neither seems to mention the other on their respective web pages, I’m guessing that they are not related.

The only place I’ve ever been that does steak better than Bone’s is Bern’s Steak House in Tampa. Absolutely unbelievable!

Approaching Bone’s, but not quite there, is St. Elmo in Indianapolis. But the shrimp cocktail at St. Elmo is the best ever!

I’m also a big fan of the original Palm on Second Avenue in New York City.

My faves in no particular order:

Don Roth’s Blackhawk
Weber Grill
The Prime Minister

But I also like Lone Star.

Darnit, Bern’s was going to be my contribution to better all your lives.

Alfonza’s Olde Plantation Club St Simons Island, Georgia has good and bad days, but I’ve had some awesome steaks there.

My favorite is Izzy’s Steakhouse in San Francisco near the marina. (The others I know about are in Corte Madera and Redwood Shores). I’ve heard others say that they weren’t impressed, but I’ve been to the ones that usually get rated higher – the House of Prime Rib and Ruth’s Chris in SF – and I still like Izzy’s better. It’s all about the Prime Rib; their NY strip and filet mignon are fine but nothing remarkable.

I can’t believe somebody mentioned Outback; I’m definitely no connoisseur when it comes to steak, but I’ve tried Outback three times and it wasn’t even “okay,” but just plain bad.

De gustibus non disputanem

A dear friend took me to dinner at Bern’s for my 21st birthday. It was all right. Having heard paeans to Bern’s for years, I was mightily disappointed. Maybe I just got them on an off night? I don’t know - I haven’t tried again, because I don’t have $100+ to potentially waste on another “okay” steak dinner that could get me at least two much better ones somewhere else.

Being a Central Florida person, I’ve also had Disney annual passes for years, along with a membership in “Disney’s Dining Experience,” which carries a 20% discount for practically any restaurant on property. The best steaks I’ve ever had are at the Concourse Steakhouse, in the Contemporary Resort.

YMMV

i have several favorites, but i have to disagree with outback. RC is certainly overpriced, but they serve prime grade steak. i could be wrong, but the steaks i had at outback certainly did not appear prime nor were they particularly tender. I thought they were OK for a steak dinner, but not something I would brag about.

for those outside of NY, i have heard that Bob’s Steakhouse is a new chain with delicious steaks. I personally have not tried them. In Denver, the Del Frisco’s in the Tech Center is very good. The Capitol Grille downtown is really good, too. However, for bang for the buck, try the Summit in Aurora. Great prime steaks with sides that are not a la carte. Also, Steakhouse No. 10 is a great Greek steakhouse in Littleton, CO run and owned by a single family. Lots of fun and terriffic food.

good evening friends

here in omaha, nebraska (internationally known for great steaks, my favorite is a small, family owned place called gorat’s. great aged steaks, inexpensive and freindly atmosphere. the last time i ate there, warren buffet and bill gates were just a couple of tables away…

Slight hi-jack!

Stainz and I are going to Vancouver (BC) for a little R&R. I would like to know what the best steakhouse in Vancouver would be?

I’ve been to Hy’s in Vancouver and it was teh win!

I was in Schaumburg Il last year and went to Morton’s. Holy mother was it good! A little pricey ($120US after tip for just myself!!) but it was very good. There’s a Mortons in Vancouver, but I’m not sur eif it is better than Hy’s or not. I have also heard good things about Gotham’s steak house in Vancouver as well.

Any thoughts?

Thanks…

If you want to eat someplace different you can try Doe’s eat place in Greenwood. Just remember to bring cash, they don’t accept checks or credit cards.

I have to agree with this. When I was in Toronto I went because someone recommended it - and went back the next night! Fabulous!

Locally, I agree with Sol - Izzys is terrific. I also like Home on upper Market Street. Everything is good, but the steaks are consistantly excellent. Next San Francisco fest a steak affair?

Smoky’s Club in Madison, Wisconsin was named the best steak house in the Midwest by Midwest Living magazine.

I’ve had Izzy’s prime rib, and very nice it was too. But I tend to think of prime rib as a roast instead of a steak, because it is cooked together as a large cut of meat in an oven and then carved. If only Izzy’s made good Yorkshire Pudding I would be in heaven.

If you’re going to go to Buellton for steak you might as well go to Jocko’s in Nipomo. No atmosphere at all but they’re cheap and better, in my opinion than The Hitching Post. Their steaks are the best I’ve had in the U.S.

Mancy’s is good, but if you want the absolute best steak in the Toledo area you have to go just over the border into Erie, MI (about 5 miles from Raceway Park) and experience Angelo’s Northwood Villa.

As you can see, the prices are more than reasonable (actually, a little pricey for the Toledo area.) but I guarantee the steak is the best you have ever had. I would put their steak up against one of those $75.00 steaks from Morton’s or Ruth’s Chris any day of the week. Beats Mancy’s steak hands down.

Do most of you that like Pittsburgh style steaks normally like your steaks rare?

I hate well-done or even medium-rare steaks, but wonder if I would like a Pittsburgh-style steaks.
