Best supermarket-shelf books

99.9% of the books being sold at checkout counters and airport newstands are mindnumbling awful. But every once in a long while, you come across suprisingly good pulp fiction.

I don’t remember whether I actually bought Dean Koontz’s Odd Thomas in an airport, or whether I got it out of the library. I know that Koontz is by no means a great writer, but Odd Thomas (though not the endless sequels) is oddly touching. It’s sad, sweet, and thoughtful paranormal murder mystery, not a combination you often come across. Anyway, I fell in love with Odd, and his charming little town. Checking on Amazon, the reviewers like it, too.
