So the Greek police have arrested suspected members of the “November 17” terrorist organization. TheReuter story says they’ve been hunting this group for 27 years, and these are the first arrests, EVER.
Does this make November 17 the best terrorist cell ever, or the Greek police the worst investigative service ever?
I believe there has been some alleged deliberate misdirection of police investigations.
Also this group have not been given such a high priority as one would expect.
The real reason anything at all is happening is due to two factors, the execution of a British mititary attache and the subsequent appearance on Greek tv of his widow, which apparently hit the Greek conscience, and the upcoming Olympic games with its need for a safe environment. Those games could generate lots of tourist cash and kudos for the Greeks, but a terrorist disaster would soon turn the tables.
Given that the Greek poice have only really been making real efforts in the past few months, it would seem to me that they are perfectly competant given the desire, and the terrorists have been lucky that no-one deemed them important enough until lately.
