With the impending move to a new job and city (woo hoo ) I find myself in need of a new car. I am looking at a 4 door sedan which will be reliable, safe and decent on gas and will last 150,000+ (plus would like new or certfied used so as to be under warranty. . . )
Have the Internet car buying sites become useful? Can you get better deals then dueling with the morally impaired dealers? Advice and experiences are welcome as it has been 3+ years since I bought a car. Thanks all!
Never bought one off the net, but I will give a big thumbs up to the Accord. Both sides of the family have owned them in various vintages from 84+, and have never had one ounce of problem with them.
I worked with a dot.com entrepreneur, son of a car dealer family, whose business plan was to develop a way to buy cars off the Net.
Among other problems, in the U.S. the auto companies will not sell cars direct to consumers. So if you want a new car, one way or another you’ll be dueling with a morally impaired dealer.
If you want the best price, you’re going to have to go through all the negotiating tips all the new car guides talk about. If you want the least hassle, no can go to a “no haggle” dealership. If you want to buy a new car in City A, but not pick it up until you move to City B, you can do that on the Net. But in my experience, you won’t be saving much money.

My mother just bought an almost-new (2002 Dodge Intrepid - 7000 miles) from e-bay. She paid about half blue book for a new Intrepid. This is her second Intrepid - she really likes her first one. My mother is a 71 year old e-bay queen.
Go to all of the online car dealers (carsdirect, autobytel) and find the best price for the exact car you want.
Print out the page from the web site of the cheapest one and bring it to the dealer.
Tell the fuckhead salesman that you will not pay one penny more than that price. He can sell it to you today or you will go home and buy it online.
Make sure that the fuckhead salesman doesn’t stick any extra bullshit on your invoice like delivery charges or security number etchings on the windows. Ask for an itemized copy.
