Other than time and wear, and putting it in the sun, I have this heavy cotton work shirt that is very dark green and I would like to fade it a little. Do you think washing it with a capful of bleach would work? RIT color remover, ?
Wow-- no help from anyone!
I think no one wants to be responsible for your sorta-stripey kinda-tie-dyed stone-washed-lookin’ shirt…
(If I tried the bleach trick, that’s what I’d end up with…)
I think RIT colour remover would work fine, as would bleach. Just make sure that the bleach or RIT is well-blended with a full tub of water before putting the shirt in.
I have faded an overly dark, denim baseball cap using bleach with very good results. Of course my mindset at the beginning was - I may screw this up so badly I have to throw it away. I can’t remember how much bleach I used. It took me a couple of tries and I remember it being more bleach than I would have thought it would take and a long soak time.
Well, I washed it a few times in hot water and it has faded some. I think I’ll try just one capful of bleach, well swished in a lot of water, and just leave it out in the sun. No shortage of sun!
Be careful leaving it in the sun as you can end up with areas that are much less faded where it was shaded - like under the arms, etc.
How do you do this to ensure you won’t end up with spotty results on your shirt?
I found Ritt Dye Remover doesn’t work once the shirt has been washed and dried.
I tried beach but always got spots.
So how do you avoid spotting?
You avoid spotting by dissolving the bleach in the water before you add the clothes. And make sure you don’t splash yourself while you’re doing it, because that’s how I always end up ruining the shirt I’m wearing!
Well. Mr. Sali filled up the machine to the top with water and added a cap of bleach and let it agitate a good long while before adding his shirts. He did this three times that I know of. The dark, dark green faded to a much lighter gray-green, no spots or streaks. The dark, dark brown faded to…purple! THAT was a surprise. But it looks good, no streaks or patches. But purple! Well, I hope he likes purple, that shirt was expensive, a heavy cotton twill from Cabella’s. The shirts look good, so I guess the bleach solution worked.
