best way to get tv reception?

I have a house in town that we run as a recovery house for women that have graduated from a substance abuse program. Right now we have basic Time Warner cable. They are going all digital, which means we need a converter box on each of 7 tv’s.

This is NOT going to happen. By the nature of the house, residents come and go and sometimes things go with them that should stay.

I’m looking for an alternative that allows tv service, but that requires residents to provide their own box if they do want tv service in their rooms. ROKU looks promising on first blush as we are planning on providing internet for those who are working on improving their education but I have little knowledge on tv service as I don’t watch tv.

Any suggestions for a situation like this??

Thanks!

Just get an antenna?

I would think you would want WiFi for providing internet - I think there’s a way to not just password protect but to limit devices so people can’t just give each other the password. Someone with more know-how will hopefully turn up with more info on that.

A whole-house antenna usually works fine unless you’re in the boonies or have some other reception issue. Mount the antenna outside if your town allows it, or in the attic. Going that route eliminates each TV having rabbit ears that people can walk off with or fight over if they require moving for certain channels or something (plus better overall reception anyway). Once the initial expense is done for the main antenna and wiring the TV’s, it’s totally free that way and all you need to worry about is internet and maintaining the WiFi - which you would need with ROKU boxes that can also be walked off with anyway.

Over the air, good old fashioned antennas provide plenty of *free *channels of television if you in an area that can receive them. Many stations have several secondary networks available on their alternate subchannels free for the watching.

They still make antennas? That seems like the best solution. They have asked for internet and tv service but want it to be free. The only place you can get that, as far as I know, is prison.

Getting internet would increase their rent; they scream bloody murder. If they can rent somewhere else getting room, utilities, tv and internet inclusive for 475.00 to 525.00 per month in a clean safe neighborhood then that’s where they need to be for them to be happy… and I want them to be happy.

To those who are suggesting “get an antenna”:

I suspect this means that all the TVs are too old to receive over-the-air digital signals without a converter box, either.

Pretty sure he’s referring to “cable box” but he’ll have to clarify whether the TV’s are digital or older CRT types.

The tvs that they have were free to them so I am guessing that they are not state of the art.

The lady who is my on-site facilitator is pushing for ClearTV.

ClearTV is just “get an antenna”
You still need a newer TV with a built-in digital tuner, or a digital convertor box for OTA signals
does anyone else find the ClearTV commercials really annoying. It’s just an antenna the way TV was done for 100 years and they’re acting like it’s some big new thing

ClearTV is just an antenna. There’s nothing magical about it. If your clients’ TVs are analog, you still need a separate converter to receive digital signals. If they’re newer (2006 or newer), they’ll have digital receivers. But either way, you need an antenna for each set. Just about any antenna is as good as another in any given location.
