Best way to research an elementary school?

I need to find out about the elementary school that my son will be going to if I stay in my current apartment. I’m nervous because it isn’t in the school district that I thought it was–I’m on the wrong side of the apartment complex!! I was told by several people when I moved in “oh good, you’re in X district, not Y district” (The sign on the front of the complex boldly states “X Schools!” as a selling point, so I thought that is what it was!) and now that I find out that only part of the complex is X and that I am, in fact, in Y, I’m quite nervous, based on people’s reactions.

So I need to research Y district and this school in particular. Does anyone have any advice on where to start, what to look for, etc?

Use the Experimental Method.

Capture a gradeschool child, of average size, from all of the schools under consideration, & then dissect them.
Remove their brains by sawing off the top of their little noodles, & weigh them in pan scales. Assign numerical rankings based on weight-lightest to heaviest.

Subject each brain to microscopic analysis to determine the average density of neural connections per cubic mm. Assign numerical rankings based on density-least to greatest density.
Average each score, per specimen child.
Highest scoring child/school is the right choice.
Oh, BTW–check em for Cooties, too.

Raw data should be here.

It was a big help to me.

Thanks for the links! Wow that greatschools site had a lot of information, including the very disturbing news that the school he’s supposed to go to is a Title 1 school “in need of improvement”. Which sucks. The potential silver lining is that it also says “parents may have school transfer and supplemental service options” because of the status of the school.

I called the school district to find out about the transfer options, but the lady to talk to won’t be in until tomorrow.

Cross your fingers.

We hope the ratings and information are helpful, and we encourage everyone to share insights about their school in our community reviews. Parents love getting the straight dope from other parents (and teachers) who know the school best. Just go to your school’s profile, or find it at Write a school review | GreatSchools

Wow. This was a really weird Zombie thread to see.

What grade would OpalCat’s son be in by now? High school sophomore or junior?

I’m sure he’s graduated by now.

She said he was 7 in October 2002, so yeah.

Opal is gone and her son has graduate. won’t delete this as spam simply because GreatSchools was brought up by someone else, but this has certainly run its course. Closing thread.
