What’re your suggestions for how to go about doing it?

get quotes from all the big companies and go with the cheapest. Just be sure they’re all quoting the same coverage.
What state are you in? Your state Insurance Department might have an auto insurance guide.
I just bought me a newer vehicle and was surprised how much my insurance increased with having t carry full coverage after having nothing but liability for years. I went to an independent agent that sells for about a dozen different companies. The best price he got was only $8 less that what I was quoted by Geico. I decided the extra $8 was worth sticking with a nationally known company instead of some company from Minnesota I have never heard of.
Either get quotes online, or visit their offices. Usually I just go with whatever is cheaper, which happens to be (at least for me), Progressive.
Are you a good driver? I.e., do you have no moving violations/accidents in the last five or so years? Then get online quotes from Progressive, Esurance, and GEICO, and go with the cheapest. If you’ve had incidents in the past, then do the same but also get quotes from multiple companies from an agent.
I’m afraid I had an incident a while back (about a year, I think) where I backed into a parked car while getting out of a parking spot. I left a note even though no one was paying any attention to what I was doing, so it’s “on my record.” Part of the reason I’m wanting to at least see if there’s any hope for my wallet.
Try Costco.
I’ve been sick of my insurance company for a while but was just too lazy to change it. Years ago I was asked why I stuck with the one I had because it was supposed to be really expensive. I looked and sites like Progressive quoted me roughly the same price. More recently they made a mistake that ended up costing me HUNDREDS.
So I got pissed off and decided to check out the rates through Costco. If it was cheaper than the $1450 per six months I was paying, I’d jump ship. So the quote came back and for increased coverage it was $800. So I made sure, “For six months?”
NO! YEARLY! Saved 45%. Only pissed off at myself for not looking sooner.
