Best Western (movie)

Glad to see someone mentioned El Dorado and Support Your Local Sherrif - two of my favorites from childhood. Silverado is another fave as well as The Sons of Katie Elder.

My Darling Clementine
Unforgiven
Johnny Guitar
The Grey Fox
and, for the great memories of watching it with my dad,
Cat Ballou
Also wanted to mention El Topo, not because it is good, but because it is the weirdest western of all time. Unless someone’s seen a weirder one…

  1. Unforgiven

Sorry–been swamped, but glad to see people are still posting. The poll will be up by tomorrow morning.

Baa Ram Ewe!

Agreed.

Hombre
Unforgiven
The Proposition
Open Range
High Noon
3:10 to Yuma (original, though the remake is not too shabby)
The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean
Shane
The Shootist
Dead Man
The Magnificent Seven
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Off the top of my head, not read others responses yet.

  1. Once Upon A Time in the West
  2. A Fistful of Dollars
  3. Bad Day at Black Rock (set after WWII, but still has the feel of a Western)
  4. The Outlaw Josie Wales
  5. Unforgiven

Looks like the idea of a poll on this topic just wouldn’t fly?

No, I’m sorry–been really swamped (but we’ve had some more good posts in the interim). This weekend–I SWEAR!

I’m sure all of your submissions are fine films, but, silenus got it right in post #37.

Them other movies are probably all well worth a look, but once you’ve seen Rustlers’ Rhapsody, you’ve had a taste of everything that a Western needs.

110 posts and no one has mentioned the Trinity movies. They may not be great art but they are great fun. Also I would have to say My Name is Nobody with Terence Hill and Henry Fonda is also in the same line as the Trinity movies and is definetly in my top 5.

“Trinity”? :frowning:

Go to Best Western (not the motel chain) and vote!

Great work, ArchiveGuy!

Any ideas for further tweaking?

I’d forgot about Open Range, which I would put up as a candidate for the best Western so far in this millenium.

I’d like to recommend the movie Good for Nothing, a recent (2011) Western, about an outlaw who’s frustrated because he can’t rape his hostage due to erectile dysfunction, and rides all over the west looking for a cure. I can’t say it’s in my top ten Westerns list, but I found it very entertaining.

I’ll keep an eye out for GfN! I agree on OR: one of the best if not THE best gunfights ever filmed. kevin kostner and robert duvall gunfight from open range
