St. Olaf College’s fight song, “Um Yah Yah”, in waltz time.
I just love hearing that little 10 second hook when the LA Kings score. They used to play the whole song at the beginning or end of a game, but then they made this so-so song…eh, I’m kinda used to it.
The Cleveland Cavaliers had a great 1970s funk theme song way back when
The Orlando Magic official theme is equal parts awesome and awful. It’s kind of Miami Sound Machine meets Harold Faltermeyer (the 80s movie theme song guy) with a dash of late eighties sitcom theme and a sprinkling of “world music” rhythms.
Really, it’s fucking amazing that any good music appeared in the early nineties.
I think the OP is referring to songs about teams, not songs adopted by teams. *You’ll Never Walk Alone * is an old Rodgers and Hammerstein show tune.
That wouldn’t count either, for the same reason.
That’s the one I was going to post. All kinds of awesome indeed!!
I love that short hook the Packers play about fifty times a game (you know the one… bom, bom, ba bom-bom-bom, “Go Pack Go”). And back in the day on ESPN, Chris Berman breaking out the “San Diego Super Chargers” line always made me smile.
Also, it may not be an official team song, but I think WI Badgers football has pretty much co-opted “Jump Around.”
And I love the fact that somebody mentioned Steve Goodman and the Cubs… I’m a Brewers fan myself, but I’m old enough that I became a fan pre-NL move so I can’t hate the Cubs too much. Having said that, if you hear “A Dying Cub Fan’s Last Request” and you’re not at least a little bit moved, check your pulse.
Maybe I’m biased on this, but the Oakland Raiders “Autumn Wind” kicks ass. Sadly, the team no longer does.
With “lyrics”:
The Cincinnati fight song, “Bengals Growl”, is cheesier than a Wisconsin farm convention.
“Run, pass, or boot”, indeed!
The Ottawa Senators fanfare:
I love it. It really only needs the first fifteen seconds, though, which is all you usually hear.
I’ve never liked any “team songs” in American professional sports. I sort of appreciate some college team songs.
The only team song associated with a professional team that I’ll endorse is “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel- it’s the team song for the Liverpool soccer club… as any good Pink Floyd fan knows.
ahem See posts 6 and 24. And it’s Liverpool Football Club.
At least the Twins’ song is relatively short, unlike some of these other cheesefests. Here is the original unabashedly cheesy 1961 version.
Skol Vikings has cheesy lyrics, but the tune has a collegiate fight song-like appeal. Also…SHORT!
Not surprised they failed. It doesn’t look like anyone came to watch the games!
Can you imagine if the team had survived? Would they have updated the theme song every time a team moved or an expansion happened?
I know- I just wanted to link to the Pink Floyd song that used it.
