With her family and doctor at her side, Bubbles died Monday of cancer at age 78. A superb soprano with an infectious laugh whose public performances gave so many people joy, even when her own heart must have ached at all the sorrows of her private life: She was magnificent. She will be missed.
How sad. I think her biggest accomplishment was in taking opera out of its ivory tower and making it accessable to Joe Sixpack.
That’s too bad. RIP Bubbles.
On a lighter note, while reading about her in college, I said out loud to my friend (and please excuse the morbidity) “She needs to either schedule a performance or die on September 2, 2010.”
The marquee and/or headlines would’ve read “Beverly Sills, 9/02/10.”
She should get a band together in heaven with:
Bing Crosby
Johnny Cash
and
Carl Jung.
I wonder what an appropriate name for the quartet would be?
She spoke at my college graduation. I don’t remember much from her speech other then it was nice. But I remember all the bubbles being blown by students drifting across the lawn.
RIP.
While we’ll miss her, I think Heaven’s need for Beverly Sills is greater. Goodness knows that they don’t get very many sopranos up there.
In bocca al lupo, Bev.
Such a beautiful voice. She will be missed and heaven will gladly accept her.
Saxophonist Boots Randolph also just departed this veil of tears. If you need to audition your way into heaven, they could do quite a duet.
Am I the only one who remembers Bev Sills tap dancing on The Muppet Show?
Even I, so not a classical music or opera fan, was enchanted by her. Her life – personal and professional – was very interesting. I was shocked when I heard this morning that she’d died. I feel sad now that she’s gone.

Now I have this vision of a bunch of dirty old angels chasing after Beverly Sills while Yaketty-Sax is playing…
I remember PBS once showing a film clip of *“Bubbles” Silverman * from 1937.
