You ever had a subject in school that is so far beyond your understanding, at least initially, only to be conceived as magic? For one of my friends it is any math class above basic algebra, for me it’s Physics - as my current grades only go to prove.
Does everyone have a subject like this? Or is it the right brainers? Or is it just completely random?
I’ve always been the analytical type, so artistic and creative tasks have always seemed like magic to me., especially visual arts.
I saw a sketch artist on a beach once who was doing pencil drawings of people for $20 (or whatever). He finished each one in about 5 minutes and they were good. I was completely floored that someone could draw something that accurate that quickly. I am literally a stick-figure sketcher, and even those suck.
It also seems like magic when someone can effortlessly play a musical instrument. Like people that can play piano and chat with people that are listening to them.
I can play 2 chords on a guitar, and then only if I really concentrate.
That would be Quantitative Genetics. Specifically the seminar I attended in grad school. Well…I attended the first half of the year anyway.
I’ve still got the textbook. Always meant to look at it sometime and see if makes any more sense but I’m afraid it’ll just make me feel stupid again.
Maybe I should just bury it in the backyard somewhere.
Integral Calculus. I lasted about 2 days in that class in high school, then went to see my counselor and switched into something appropriate for a future Social Sciences major: Bachelor Foods!
I watch my student stoday whizz right through Calc, and shudder every time I remember the class. Totally alien to me, and always will be.
Not a subjet I had at school but a subject none the less -
Quantul physics. I keep trying to read ‘The Universe in a nutshell’ - Steven Hawking. But Every time I do I descend into mode. I’m like what the f%()*ing hell is he talking about.
All the subjects I had at school I wouldn’t have had a problem with if I had bothered to pay attention. (I got two B grades in my science exams by sheer common sense. I didn’t bother to revise or force myself to learn, I just learned by accident and knew the answers. I wish I had paid attention because in hindsight I might have got A grades across the board. Back then I didn’t think I had a brain. Turns out I do)
Although there is one nugget I quite like - Probably paraphrased “Asking what came before the big bang [i.e. the beginning of time] is like asking what’s south of the south pole”
