Bias against ghetto dwellers

Who is Jack, and why do blacks make him shit?

Good one light strand!

Bush should fire Condolezza Rice, then. Her poor speech patterns and slothfulness really do make him look bad.

Again monstro, I’m talking about majorities in my (many) experiences. Get real.

I’d really like to see a comparable study done with names that are not black-sounding but stereotypically class-marked – say, Britnee, Dakota, and Madison vs. Emily, Hannah, and Elizabeth. I’m not sure what results I would predict, but either way, they’re bound to be illuminating.

monstro, Do you really think blacks are raised the same as whites and are just like whites but with dark skin? Do you think if we chose a black adult American randomly, along with a white adult American randomly, there is an equal chance they speak English correct?

I wish to rescue this thread from the hypocrisy and-- dare I say it?-- racism of a certain poster in it.

I’d like to explore what exactly constitutes “ghetto”. The study quoted in the OP culled their “subjects” from newspapers in Chicago and Boston where one can assume most applicants will be urban. Did these employers really believe that they could weed out certain kinds of blacks on the basis of their names? Or was the 50% disparity due to the fact that they thought they could weed out blacks by name only?

I’ve got a somewhat personal interest in this. My daughter has one of those “black” names (although our last name may very well mitigate her circumstance). Did I doom my daughter by naming her Ebony? Will she be saved by our very Scottish/Irish last name?

One reason that companies may avoid minorities is that due to discrimination lawsuits if they hire someone that is a minority, and they turn out to be a bad employee, they have a hard time letting them go without being sued.
Once I was given an employee who was hired by someone leaving the company out of spite. Her job was to telephone customers and conduct surveys. On average she did about 25-35 a day (about 10 less than everyone else). After one week on the job, she filed for a disability claim from dialing the phone. The HR director (also a black woman) told me to be sure to carefully document everything with her, keep performance records, all notes that performance was lacking, etc… because someday we were going to need it. (At the same time, my BEST performer was also black female, so I am in no way saying that ALL, MOST or whatever are a problem, just that when you have a problem with a minority, you have a real problem that you don’t have with others.) When the time came to reduce the department size, the choice was obvious who should go. Of course a couple of weeks later we have an EEOC complaint. We showed our documentation, and the problem went away. If we had not been so careful, it might have been different.
Another example was a woman who filed EEOC complaints every time she didn’t get her way. It took almost 5 years to get rid of her. Once she applied for a job that reported to a friend of mine. He interviewed her, and told her she could have the job if she wanted it, and told her what the pay way (the same as for 5 other people in the same job). She was making more where she was, so she said no, I want XX,XXX. Well, that figure was more than my friend the manager made, so of course that wasnt going to happen. So what happens? Yep, EEOC complaint.

Many discrimination lawsuits are just like affirmative action. They are intended to help, but in reality they hurt those that are capable on their own of achievement.

What I never understood is how can you claim discrimination if a company hired you in the first place?

One last thing about resumes. There are two black Universities in my city. One, you don’t call graduates in for interviews. Why? I have never yet seen one resume where the person did not graduate with an A average or better. And my experience, and those of others I have spoken with, has been that they did not learn much in college and are unprepared to join the workforce. The other, you always call them in because they are educated, eager, and just wanting a chance to get started in a career. It has been my experience that as a whole the grads of the second U. are great employees, while those of the first feel entitled to a paycheck just because they got a degree.

Well, if I were your random choices I’m sure I could best him in 2 languages.

BTW I’m sure you hate us Hawaiians as well becuse of our “Pidgin” English. After all it shows were not as smart as you “Oxford” educated types. So sorry massa.

The irony here is reaching critical mass.

Explain the irony robertliguori.

Since you have a hard time even writing correct English, I’d say yes.

And since you don’t seem to have a clue, I’m black. I’m much more exerienced with black people than you ever will be, so I don’t give a flying fuck about your “experiences”. Compared to what I know, anything you’ve experienced is limited.

I don’t like anyone saying that’s it’s alright for someone to discriminate against me simply because they believe people who look like me are a certain way. Maybe I’m an anamoly; maybe I’m not. But I deserve to be treated like a fucking individual. This is a fundamental concept of humanity that you don’t seem to grasp.

Me too. It would also be interesting to look at “white” names that ARE class-marked. Names like Abner, Ernest, Ray, Lerlene, Charlene, and Sue Ann versus more mainstream, “rich” names. Also, what happens to “hippie” names like Moonbeam and Rain. I bet these resumes would get excluded too, but I don’t know.

Texican, lots of reasons.

One way is if after being hired, you are constantly passed over for promotion by others who are less qualified but make up the same race/gender as a majority of the other employees and/or management.

Another way is if you were hired only for quota sakes. I.E your hired there but your treated like crap by the ther employees and/or management.

It is a double edged sword though, like the examples you mentioned with the EEOC complaints. Now if she were producing just as much as the other workers or more, she may have a viable claim. But if she truly had poor preformance/attitude problems, her complaint dosen’t hold much water IMB.

Monstro, good idea. I have a French first name and an old English last name (that’s also somewhat famous in basketball and Gospel music though there is no relation) Also I sound like either A. A “local” Japanese guy or B. a “Haole” over the telephone. So when I’m called in they are pretty shocked…and may I say pleased.

S I guess me (being only one person) would represent my whole race.

So, you and robertligouri are assuming I’m white? Talk about stereotyping.

I don’t give a shit what you don’t like. I’ll say what I like.If I’m an employer and I only have time to see a certain amount of applicants I wouldn’t have time to treat you like an individual. All things on the resume being equal, I’m calling in William before Darnell.

Maybe you’re seeing my point; You live in Newark. If you’re as intelligent as you’re coming off, you know you are. Just look out your window.

I don’t think so, but I tend to be pessimistic.

Funny thing is I know 3 Ebonys and only one of them is black.

And see what? See that bigots like you perpetuate the madness of inequality? Based on what you’ve said, you can simply look at me and know that I won’t be hardworking or intelligent or use “good” diction. Thank God everyone in the world isn’t like you, or I wouldn’t have a job!

No, you can see what was once a beautiful city that turned to shit. I guess that’s whitey’s fault.

Well, it certaintly isn’t black people’s fault. So your point?
