Most of us remember this from our childhood and Disney’s Cinderella. I always assumed this was a nonsense word that Disney made up.

Until I heard a song in an Italian restaurant that wasn’t the Disney song from Cinderella. But it was in Italian, so I couldn’t tell what it was about. (Maybe a post-Disney pop song?)

Then today I was reading a short story in a terror/supernatural collection and a story written in the mid-1800’s used it as the name of the Devil’s grand-daughter. The author was Russian, but

That story would be “Bubnov and the Devil” by Turgenev, right? We probably have the same collection.

You’ll also notice that somewhere in the first two pages the devil says “What, you don’t believe I’m the devil? I’ll make these thistles do a Cossack dance.” Noting that this occurs in “Fantasia”, this story must have been well-known at Disney.

Not to nitpick Zenster…but weren’t those the names of the good witches/fairies in Sleeping Beauty and not Cinderella?

Yup, you’re right. It’s been decades since I’ve seen either of these excellent cartoons.
