Biblical excrement

Who coined the term “holy shit?”. How long has it been in use? Is it supposed to be an oxymoron? A slap at religion?

“Holy” has been used, mainly in the US, as an adjective to express “horror” in phrases such as “Holy Cow”, “Holy Smoke”, “Holy Terror”, “Holy Willie”, “Holy Joe”, “Holy Moses”, etc. It was in print by the mid-1800’s, but certainly was in use well before that.

Probably not anti-religious.

Well, Saint Wossname’s feces are kept in a tiny gold case in the Vatican, as a holy relic. Right next to the holy toilet paper roll.

An artist was commissioned to do a painting of General Custer’s last words.

He painted a scene of dung with angels wings and halos, flying over a field of thousands of Native Americans in various stages of coitus.

He titled it:

  • Holy Shit! Look At All The F___ing Indians!*
the blank space gets the letters C, K, and U, but not in that order.
