One of my students referenced this in class. She’s not here right now, so I can’t ask, and I didn’t entirely understand what she was talking about: something along the lines of “Sleepy Joe (her phrasing, not mine)” raised wages (or taxes) on online art, making it hard for people trying to support themselves by doing art online?
I can’t find anything on the sleepy internet about that.
As a teacher, I used to say “Cite?” to my students (they came up with all sorts of “facts” in class). It was practically a cliché here at the time, and served me well.
A number of those students have Etsy sites or do other online art sales. I’ll ask around.
Thank you. I will try and get more information about it later from her.
Occam’s Razor:
She’s clearly a Republican (uses typical childish insults about Biden), so is so stupid that she either believed an outright lie, or misunderstood something completely unrelated.
This is the most likely explanation; She’s dumb as a box of rocks.
Oh, she’s not dumb at all. She is very focused on anime/memes/online art and uses electronics constantly, so your second suggestion that she’s repeating a garbled story is plausible. As for being Republican-possible. It would slightly surprise me as she’s a member of a group not well treated by them, but that’s no barrier, I suppose. I try to mostly stay away from politics in the room (so that things don’t escalate) but it’s not always possible.
A few things to remember here.
- Biden can’t raise taxes. That is Congress.
- The Republican, when passing the last tax cut, decided to screw the middle class After the 2020 election and had the tax cuts for most of America either expire or slowly go away over the next several years.
So your student, is believing the Republican lies.
It is sad that people can’t see what is going on in this country, but I guess that is just the new reality now.
I assume it has to do something with this:
That’s been making the Facebook rounds. And, yes, if you sell online art you are supposed to pay tax on it. They’re not raising it – there’s some reporting requirements with online payment services that has changed.
That makes sense. I never would have put that as part of Biden raising taxes on art.
Thanks
Yes, I just asked her for more information and this is it, as I understand it. Thank you! I certainly had the wrong information. I’ll try to send it to her so she can see what she got wrong. I also found this article, which I think she was also thinking of and may have just intermixed the two.
I suspect what she’s talking about is the part of the bipartisan infrastructure bill that requires:
This would seem squarely aimed at digital coins like Bitcoin, and also NFT (a Bitcoin-adjacent digital pyramid scheme for selling imaginary receipts for digital works of art). I’ll leave it as an exercise for the reader to determine whether that makes it “hard for people trying to support themselves by doing art online.”
But it’s really better to ask people like this exactly what they meant, rather than doing the work for them.
I am suspecting this has something to do with internet sales taxes. For years many states have argued they are losing money from internet sales. On June 21, 2018, the Supreme Court rules that states can collect sales taxes on internet sales. Biden had absolutely nothing to do with this. Currently 34 states collect sales taxes on internet sales. In the Ebay forums there are many discussions about this, many are claiming the taxes are directed at their particular online sales. For me, it is one of the reasons I have quit selling on Ebay. Between the sales taxes, Ebay’s ridiculous fees and the cost of shipping, a small seller like me can no longer compete.
Absolutely, and I was able to ask her to clarify her statement and find that link. I suspect misconnecting “Sleepy Joe” was part of her political beliefs as well. Thanks for your replies, folks. Next time I’ll try and get more information before making my topic.
She used the term “Sleepy Joe”, which is entirely a Republican bullshit insult. She got it from somewhere, she didn’t just make it up herself. If she’s not dumb, she’s been infected with the stupid.
I’m not implying anything against the student but I imagine this law is more about onlyfans and twitch then crocheting doilies or sci fi drawings.
NFT’s with smart contracts are designed to be tracked, that’s how the original artist will get paid for resales, tracking is built into the chain.
I’m curious how much is the student making from online sales of her art?
I’m not sure. She mentioned it in reference to friends and acquaintances online who were opposed to the measure. I think she’s sold a few pictures.
Thanks. To be honest, it sounds like “Joe the Plumber” or those complaining about estate taxes when they’re very far from being affected by them.
True. She’s also a high school student, so likely.
Yeah. Probably sales taxes. It’s a lot harder to ignore them when selling online than it was just a year or two ago. Used to be that you only had to collect for the state you were based in; now you have to collect for a dozen or more states. We have had to hire a bookkeeper to exclusively deal with sales tax; something I managed myself in just an hour every quarter when it was just California we had to deal with.
