I’m a critic of US foreign policy and would agree that the US in the late 1990s and throughout the 2000s had a foreign policy track record that, at best, was hypocritical, and in many regards, could be reasonably perceived as menacing toward Russia.
Having said that, Russia is hardly a neutral political force. They, too, have spheres of influence that extend well beyond their political borders, and they’re not above meddling, coercion, assassinations, information warfare, cyber warfare, and other forms of warfare to achieve their political objectives.
What Russia’s done to US foreign interests and against the interests of Western democratic influence warrants a response – if for no other reason than to send a message that while we don’t intend to harass you, we intend to stand up for US interests and those of our political allies.
Considering that he has challenged Putin while simultaneously working with him on missile treaties, I think Biden’s striking the right balance. Long overdue, IMO.
