Evidence for supporting the theory of the Big Bang is as follows:
The darkness of the sky - Olbers paradox
The Hubble Law - the linear distance vs. redshift law
Homogeneity - our location in the universe is not special
Isotropy - the sky looks the same in all directions to 1 part in 100,000
CMBR - Cosmic microwave background radiation - the universe has evolved from a dense, isothermal state
Are you in agreement with this theory or do you think the universe has always existed ? Do you think the universe is finite in size or is infinite and boundless ?
I used to think so as well (and I am just as unqualified as you if not more unqualified) but I think the new thinking on this is the Universe is flat and hence infinite.
Also, the is a new theory for the Big Bang called (I think) the Cyclic Universe (or Brane…not really sure) theory. This new theory does away with some inconvieneces of Big Bang theory. Of course, it is a relatively new theory so it comes with problems of its own and still has a way to go before it topples the Big Bang as the reigning theory for Creation.
Still, I like the new theory because it postulates a recycling universe. If the Universe is inifinte and expands forever it means that sooner or later the Universe will die a heat death and be a completely uninteresting place. I find that possibility distinctly unsettling. I know choosing a theory based merely upon what I like isn’t very scientific but I can’t help it so I hope the Cyclic Universe deal pans out (or at least some theory that allows interesting universes to be re-created ad-naseum).
