I meant to say this part earlier, actually. In high schools, Big Brother is probably more alive and well than ever.

Seems to me that these girls made a mistake that they’ve got to pay for. They’ve also got to learn that not everyone, although they should be, is accepting of a homosexual lifestyle, this includes their school administrators.

I think the girls knew that. It’s irrelevant. The schools aren’t entitled to treat gay students differently from straight ones, and they did.

Was showing the video to the parents the right thing? I’d say yes, only because, as you said, they’re teenagers, they do stupid things, and perhaps this gives the parents a chance to intervene and educate their daughter.

What education were the girls in need of?

Counselling to determine their sexuality? Are you serious? Every human who has ever lived has managed to determine their sexuality without ‘professional’ input.

Of COURSE big brother is alive in High School. Big brother is EVERYWHERE. You can’t take a half-mile walk in a city without being on at least a dozen different cameras in a dozen different locations. Seems to me that these girls made a mistake that they’ve got to pay for. What mistake did they make? Aside from opening themselves up as targets for homophobic administrators and parents, I mean.

If a parent is responsible for what their child does, then they have EVERY RIGHT to know what those same kids are doing.

No, they do not. Not if it puts the kids at additional risk. What benefit is gained by outing these girls to their parents? How does that help them at all?

You make wild-assed assumptions that outing these girls will get them beaten or worse. Granted, it happens, but it’s also possible that the girls will get counselling to explore and ultimately determine their sexuality. You just don’t know.

As you know, gay kids are often “confused” and “going through a phase.”

Come to think of it, I don’t know any straight people who thought they were gay in high school. I do know some gay people who tried their hardest to be straight back then. Maybe the straight kids ought to get counseling. :rolleyes:

Then the problem lies with the administrators. So why do the students have to pay for the ignorance of school administrators?

How, precisely, was it right to show this particular video to parents when the same thing happens with straight students and video is not shown to their parents? If standards are going to be applied, then they should be applied evenly.

Doesn’t really matter, as best I can determine. If they were Southern Baptists, Orthodox Jews, Zoroastrians or good ol’ All-American atheists, it would still be wrong.

Why, precisely? And I’m not just being a disingenuous schmuck (well, okay, maybe a little) when I ask that. I don’t reflexively think that surveillance is bad, but why more? And where would you recommend that said surveillance be installed?
