Just read the book Predict and Surveil -(by a sociologist named Susan Brayne, 2021). It’s an interesting short read about the potential and pitfalls of Big Data as actually used by the (LA) police. Though this subject has arisen in many places, the book contains a number of things I have not seen discussed elsewhere. Highly recommended.
At one level, the police are employees with managers, like many people. And many police do not like the idea of being surveilled at all, due to strong ideas of autonomy and independence and fears of micro-management. These systems make “policing the police” easier in some ways. Apart from public perceptions about police wearing cameras or recorders - it was fascinating to read many police are not at all enthralled about new technologies for a surprising number of reasons. One does not always get this perspective. Many police are concerned about civil liberties, of course, and this often dominates public perceptions of these issues.
The book also discusses just how inadequate the (US) legal system is, and why, with regards to the use of Big Data - and the faulty assumptions the law makes. No one really questions some need for reform, but without realizing certain things, not at all obvious to me, this may not even be possible without challenging a lot of other assumptions.
Anyone else read this?
