Big game hunter hunted and killed

South African outfitter who was known for shooting big game and having his pic taken with dead animals found shot dead. Motive not known. No suspects at the moment.

This happened in July. But in these dark times, we can always celebrate good news once again.

my google-news-fu is not the best.

A fitting cartoon …

Perhaps we could make this an omnibus “good news” thread.

You think a murder is good news?

How is murder good news?

Do you think it is impossible for a murder to be good news?

OK…how is THIS murder good news?

The irony of the situation is humorous.

Evidently whoever wrote the copy in the linked news story is gloating, or at least remarking on the irony of the hunter’s death:

While it doesn’t seem likely, he could have been the inadvertent victim of another hunter.

You just stand there looking cute
And when something moves, you shoot

I think they’re both good news but the guy killed by elephants is extra good. Poachers and big game hunters are scum. When I was in Africa we were driving through the Serengeti and two armed guards flagged us down and we gave them a lift to their station about 10 miles away. They told us they shoot poachers on site and ask questions later.

Is the real question not “can murder be good news?” but rather, “is homicide ever justified, and is it justified in this case?” Doesn’t murder mean “unjustified homicide?” IANAL

They could mount the guy’s head and display it in the lion house at the zoo.

I’d say it means unlawful homicide. I don’t think “justified murder” is an oxymoron.

Which is not to say I’m suggesting this murder - almost certainly just random crime - was justified. Rather that the outcome is good news.

And fwiw, I think lawyers are the experts in what is lawful, not what is just.

It’s possible - but as you say, unlikely, probably just random crime, since it occurred when his car broke down by the side of the road.

If it turns out an animal rights activist killed him, I wouldn’t be surprised, but murdering someone hunting legally seems a bit harsh. Now, if he was hunting illegally, all bets are off.

You can’t equate poachers and big game hunters. They are not nearly the same thing.

No difference as far as I (and the animals slaughtered) am concerned.

Of course not. They are different kinds of scumbag.

I have no problem with subsistence hunting. Culling is sometimes necessary, or the protection of livestock. And there are limited circumstances when celebrating the death of an animal might be understandable and appropriate - perhaps if a villager hunted down a predator that had been terrorizing their community.

But someone who hunts down an animal, especially a highly intelligent animal like an elephant, just to display toxic dominance and revel in its death as though killing it is a noble achievement? That is the worst of humanity.

On a disinterested rational basis, you might justifiably argue that this man caused far less unnecessary suffering and harm to animals than a factory farmer. But he chose to goad people by posing arrogantly with his kills as on Facebook posts, so fuck him, he gets no sympathy from me.
