I agree. He lost all his ships without destroying any RN ships. If he charged in as a fleet, at least he could have damaged the RN before going down.
Hmmm. The Wiki article notwithstanding, it would seem to me that for an 8-inch cruiser going toe-to-toe with a 12-inch battlecruiser is unlikely to give a good result, irrespective of whether the battlecruiser is in harbour or not. Also, looking at Port Stanley on google maps, ‘the narrows’ is 200m wide and the narrow portion is only 100m or so long. It would seem to be a near-impossible feat to shell a ship so as to block that, when any competent captain would beach to one side if necessary. It’s entirely possible that there is long winding navigable channel in Port William susceptible to easy blocking - the battlecruisers drew 9m or so, and it’s not easy to find out how deep the harbour is, although I note that the QE2 could get into Port William but not Port Stanley. Wiki lists the draught/draft of the QE2 as 9.87m and Invincible as 7.6m normal / 9m ‘heavy’.
