Big TV from the 1960s or 70s

My father-in-law is a pack rat. He goes to auctions, buys stuff and sells some of it at flea markets.

Yesterday, he asks me to help him with something. He bought one of those old Philco floor TVs from the 1960s or 1970s. The thing must weigh 500 lbs. It even has a record player in the top. We plugged it in and with rabbit ears it works. The record player is missing the needle.

He paid $25 for it and was wondering how much it would sell for. Other than missing a needle, it is in execellent condition.

Thanks for your help.

I hate to say this, but he got it for $25.00 for a reason. Unless it can reasonably be regarded as a collectible, most obsolete technology is pretty worthless. A quick EBay search found a Philco console TV going for …$25.00.

That said, I know there’s a market for old video games, which also are obsolete and weigh a ton. So you might find a collector, but the marginal value of hauling around 500 pounds of TV until you do is going to be pretty small.

Even if it could be restored to like-new condition, who would want it? Old television sets look really bad when compared to modern television sets. They either had no UHF tuner or a primitive UHF tuner. You had to futz around with the horizontal and vertical hold and fine tuning. If it was a color set, people were usually green or purple, and the color never looked right. Remote controls were rare. Sound quality was mediocre. Even the cheapest modern sets make the old sets look like junk.

…and just try to find a tube tester, or buy a tube - solid state has made us forget how often those damn things had to be checked and replaced.
