I’ve managed to book Sheep Mountain Fire Lookout (Sheep Mountain Fire Lookout, Bighorn National Forest - Recreation.gov) for a night this summer. Booking opens at 9AM my time, and it is usually booked 6 months ahead by 9:01. occasionally there are cancellations and that is how I got the booking.
I want to extend my stay at nearby campgrounds, and hike some trails. Although I can and have backpack camped, these will likely be car camping (in a tent) spots. I’m mainly interested in the stretch of 16 between Buffalo and Ten Sleep but am not dead set on that. It will take me two days to drive there, so I’m not sure how much driving I want to do once I get there.
South Fork looks OK and it is near a restaurant (I usually grab 1 lunch while camping – partially to support the local economy). Leigh Creek has some creek side sites available.
I definitely want to go on a hike or 2. Any suggestions appreciated. I have driven this stretch and really look forward to exploring it in more depth.
