Biking and tingling in hands

I’ve been caught out plenty of times in elctrical storms and I usually hide out of the way somewhere.
Mountain biking often puts a body in a location hwere it is the tallest thing around so I look at the forecasts before going to such places.

When lightening strikes a car, the current is transmitted to ground through the bodywork as it has a much lower electrical resistance than you.
This is not the case on a bicycle, there is no bodywork so I would think that in the event of a strike you are vulnerable.

The tyres might make the formation of leaders more difficult and so reduce the chances of a strike.

      • There is no cure for the agony of riding a normal bicycle. There is no seat or handlebars, nor any other product, nor any amount of adjustment that you can do to a conventional bicycle that will prevent your suffering. The salesmen are all liars. Some products hurt less than others, but they all cause pain.
Recumbent bicycles are comfortable to ride.
  • Lightning distribution is essentially random; considering the arc may have traveled a mile or two already the electrical resistance of eight inches of rubber of your car tires won’t make much difference. They may even make it more likely to be hit, in that they allow the possibility of static charges to build up within the vehicle which could be a [rather small] detirmining factor, assuming that the hit was going to occur near your car anyway. - MC

Yesterday I picked up some handle bar extensions. The ones that kind of go straight up with a curve in the middle. Not only do they look kind of cool, they work like a charm. I tried them last night and was able to move my grip around enough that the tingling wasn’t as bad or pronounced.

So, I just wanted to update and thank again those who had the suggestion.

I’d recommend against the gel gloves. I had a pair that lasted only 1 season…then they solidified. Foam padding gloves have worked better for me.

You guys with mountain bikes have it easy. After awhile on my motorcycle, my hands are tingling like a mofo, and this is with wearing gloves. I should probably get better ones.
