I actually kind of like “What Up With That?” partly because of the insane amount of energy shown by Kenan Thompson’s host character and partly for the celebrity cameos (which included people like Frank Rich of the New York Times).
I agree that to do a broad Australian accent would have missed the mark and made for the unfunny.
But I also think that Assange’s Australian accent is very typical of a lot of people I know. And he was so far off Assange’s accent that I thought he did so deliberately - in any case, for me, it brought the funny.
Stefon was wonderful tonight. And he has a girlfriend!
That was great and it was even better because Stefon did something different than he normally does on Weekend Update.
I liked the Julian Assange bit elsewhere in the show.
I think the guy is great, and I laughed so hard at his Stefan gig, that I was thinking about opening a thread to ask if it was offensive to gays. So, I guess it generally isn’t?
Anyway, his Assange bit cracked me up, too. I think I watched that about 5 times, and had to show it to a bunch of my friends. What was particularly hilarious was… guess what I got my father for Christmas this year and where I got it from?
ETA: Stefan was on again last night? I have it recorded, so I’ll be looking forward to seeing him again.
Everybody Poops from Amazon?
or the entire first season of Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper from Netflix?
Hader and Wiig are the only good things about the show.
My top sketch of the year goes to the Viral Video skit from when Jon Hamm was hosting.
No more offensive than Jersey Shore folks are to straight people. (I started to say no more offensive than Jersey Shore folks are to Jerseyans, but that’s probably “very”.) He’s doing an over the top vapid weird barfly who happens to be gay (though he does “have a girlfriend”).
I wonder what of all his character it’s Stefon that cracks him up. Perhaps it’s the padding. Also wonder if the playing with his face and hair is in place to catch himself if he starts to crack (though I’m guessing Stefon has done a lot of X as well).
I agree, and his accent seemed much better this time.
Yes, he is great. But I am partial to Armison doing Patterson.
Agree, love Stefon. Also not mentioned yet, his spot-on impression of Peter O’Toole. “One time while insatiably drunk, Albert Finney and I stole a train”
“This is fun drunk leopard”. While the “New York’s hottest club is _____” on Weekend Update bit has run its course I think Stefon could definitely be a great digital video (show us one of these clubs, or Stefon’s interpretation of a Greek diner even) or even as a supporting character in a movie (I’d watch it, particularly if it has a nude scene).
Though what makes him even more likable is that whenever I’ve seen mention of him in gossip or celebrity columns it was clear he was very much a stay-at-home family man.
Holy moly i forgot about James Carville!!! Oh my god I LOVE that!!!
Al Pacino!
I think I’ve forgotten the details because he’s just that good, he disappears into his characters…I love him to death.
And I’d like to take this moment to say that my favorite parody of all time just might be "body Fuzion" - simply because it’s exactly what parody should be: thisclose to the truth.
I’ve been wondering about Pharoah myself. This last weekend he got about 20 seconds of airtime. I’m wondering if it’s because he’s new and just needs to pay his dues or if it’s because Kenan’s on the show and they only need one token black guy at a time.
“And remember that no matter how I die, even if it’s of natural causes and on video, it was murder.”
Which is true in that if Assange were to be struck by lightning in front of 4,200 witnesses it would be instantly assumed it was murder.
