Bill Maher's Real Time, 9/9

Even is Maher does have the occasional lapse in judgement and taste, it’s NOTHING compared to venemous scum like Ann Coulter and raving liars like Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity. I’m sorry it bothers you that there’s a liberal voice on cable television. Wait a minute … no I’m not. I kinda like that it bothers you. I hope there’s an Air America-type cable news station soon, too.

It doesn’t bother me that there’s a “liberal voice” on TV (even if Maher identifies himself as a libertarian), it bothers me that it’s on a channel I’m paying extra for, and that I have to change that channel whenever he comes on.

And it’s not bothering in a hugely personal way, either; more like, well, an annoying, ankle-biting yappy dog, the kind you just want to shove a pork chop up it’s ass and toss it to a real dog. Or one of those extremely annoying commercials that make you reach for the remote just so you don’t have to see it or hear it.

Bill Maher just wishes he was Bill Hicks.

You obviously didn’t get the fact that Maher is on HBO (a channel one must pay for) as opposed to O’Reilly and Hannity on Fox (a channel we all get with the basic package). Myself, I just flip the channel whenever I see Mahers stupid face come on. If you wish to associate him with your cause…well, more power too ya Evil. Personally I’d try and keep him at arms length and go for someone like Jon Stewart, who is at least occationally amusing.

YMMV of course.

Did you guys complain when Dennis Miller was on the channel you pay for?

He was a lot less intelligent, a lot less funny and a lot more mindlessly partisan than Maher is.

Turn it around. Liberals have to pay for what Conservatives get free. Why should we have to pay to watch Bill Maher, when Conservatives get their talking heads as part of the basic package?

Bottom line: Everyone knows that HBO shows Real Time. If someone objects to that, then they’re free to not subscribe to HBO.

Actually I did and I like Dennis Miller (when he’s doing standup). When he was doing his stand up schtick like Chris Rock, then I had no problem. When he was doing a regular show…yeah, I had a problem, mostly because it sucked big time. Essentially I took the same action…switched channels to something else.

I don’t know about you, but I get Comedy Centray (and thus the Daily Show) for ‘free’…same as Fox. I also get the MSNBC, CNN, ABC/NBC (even the BBC) etc for ‘free’. While you might not think any or all of them are ‘liberal’, I don’t see any dearth of Fox opposing views on my own satelite service. YMMV.

It bothers me that my taxpayer dollars are being spent broadcasting Fox News propaganda and Rush Limbaugh dittohead talking points to the troops in Iraq and elsewhere, but that’s the way the dollar bounces. At least you have the option of dropping cable TV if it bothers you so much.

Could you provide a link to information about that? I’m not calling “Cite!” so much as requesting clarification. As far as dropping cable, I don’t think I’d go that far. Bill Maher’s show is only a small part of HBO’s lineup, and I can easily find something else to watch on another channel until his show is over. HBO would have to drop a lot of other great programming before I’d cancel my subscription to HBO (Showtime is a viable alternative).

AFN’s Fox bias:

If it’s not Rush, we don’t want to hear it:

My guess is that the military TV’s generally have FOX on because the active-duty military is overwhelmingly Republican. It’s just what they want to watch.

I think what they’re saying, Sam, is that AFNN is the only source for US TV programming in Iraq, and it tends to overwhelmingly broadcast FOX programming as opposed to any other news channel. And AFNR is the only source for US radio programming, and it carries Rush and not Air America, or even anybody from Air America. Sounds EXTREMELY partisan to me.

As far as I know, AFN has nothing like a Neilsen ratings system or any sort of viewer feedback. mechanism, so I’m curious as to whether Sam Stone thinks they’re using Ms. Cleo or a Magic 8-Ball to divine what kinds of programming their audience wants.

Every thinking comedian wishes he was Bill Hicks. (Except for the whole “dying of cancer” thing.)

How are [AFN] programs selected?

Note: it’s a quirky link, you may have to hit it a couple of times to connect.

I can’t get the link to work (I tried at least a dozen times).

How about giving us a summary,

I got through. It’s a nightmare!

Shepard Smith and Neil Cavuto. Thirty Minute Meals! Two hours of Larry King (two hours - double what a civilian must bear!). Both Leno and Letterman. Oprah. The View!, Dr. Phil… Try this:

This is more than I expected US forces to bear.

Try this link, instead. Click on the FAQ towards the bottom; under “FAQ Categories,” click on “Programming;” under “Programming Questions,” click on “How Are Programs Selected?”

For those who still can’t get to the linked data the answer is

Yes but Maher’s act most resembles someone trying to ape Hicks unsuccessfully.
