Bill of Rights Monument

Here’s a new organization that is promoting respect for the Bill of Rights “as the foundation of our individual freedoms, our laws, and the American system of justice, through the design and crafting of Bill of Rights displays to be placed on public lands throughout America, beginning with the capitol grounds of all 50 state legislatures.”

I think it’s a great idea. What say Dopers?

Are they going to set it up next to the Ten Commandments?

I shall use them for target practice to show my approval.

NurseCarmen, that’s just all sorts of wrong. . .

I’m for it! However, I’ll put dollars to donuts someone out there would find a way to be offended by it. . .

Tripler
To those folks, I say in my best John Wayne accent: “Fuck 'em, Pilgrim!”

I clicked on “contributors” to get a hint of just where they’re coming from. I only recognized two names. Randi Rhodes is a liberal talk show host. Brendan Byrne is…I dunno. I’ve heard the name, but I don’t know where.

Are you serious, or are you just being the token dissenter? What do you have against the bill of rights?

It’s a joke. Second Amendment? Right to bear arms?

I think it’s such a great idea that it should be against the law to say anything bad about it…yes, that’s a joke

I’d pitch in my support for an anti-Bill-of-Rights-burning amendment. After all, the best way to celebrate rights is to not exercise them.

This thread is better suited for IMHO.

I’ll move it for you.

It’s an open question these days whether it would be a Bill of Rights **monument ** or a Bill of Rights memorial.

Sailboat

IANAL, but I recommend that TJDude and Nurse Carmen both plead the Fifth.

I guess if there HAS to be another mossy slab in commemoration of someone or something else, the Bill of Rights is a perfectly decent subject. I certainly can’t see any reason to oppose such a monument.

But it seems sort of pointless to me.

At the dedication, we all get tio yell “Yay freedom” and feel good about ourselves for a minute. Then what?

I can’t get excited for OR against the idea.

That’s not enough. They should make people worship it. And if they don’t, lock them up without a trial.

Considering how many folks in our government seem to have a bizarre amnesia regarding the Bill of Rights these days, I think it’s rather overdue.

Still not good enough.

They should be locked up without trial, forced to read censored newspapers, worship a particular god, not of their choice, prevented from associatinhg with anyone else, prevented from owning any weapons–even steak knives, compelled to confess their crimes each morning, in detail, house soldiers in the homes siezed by the Feds, be searched every afternoon without cause, tortured periodically, and compile a list of rights, each day, of which they will then be deprived.

I love it so much I think I’ll start a church that will worship and venerate the Bill of Rights as a God.
