I guess we just have a very different view on reality. Issues like race, homosexuality, reproductive rights, etc. may not be *strictly *increasing, but they don’t “ebb and flow”. It’s a random walk with a very definite upward drift.
The Republicans tried to make birth control and issue. 99% of women use it. They’re not winning on it. A few of them decided to go hard line on abortion and come out in favor of rape. Every one of them lost. There’s no cycle here.
I heard one radio pundit making a somewhat ironic point: by increasingly becoming the party of the majority (Whites) the GOP increasingly becomes a minority party.
The traditional power structure in America has indeed been as O’Reilly stated: White, more so White male, more so White Christian male. That power structure is not gone but it is not enough. Others have power too and they want things: education, a fair shake, opportunities, rights …
Romney won those White males solidly but he still lost. That’s good news for the country and of course for a party that appeals to the wide swath of everyone else. For now.
