Only 100. Well, Ludacris better take a look behind him. Sammy’s closing fast.
JESUS FUCKING CHRIST BURNED ON A FUCKING LAWN!
I guess the Dopers think that the media does a FINE job of portraying black culture, huh? I guess the Dopers think that there is nothing wrong with media. I guess the Dopers think that one fucking Cosby show (which has been off the air for quite awhile) COMPLETELY FUCKING COMPENSATES for non-stop media of Vick, Riots, Crime Stats, etc.
GUESS WHAT YOU DUMBFUCKS - THE MOTHERFUCKING MEDIA HAS AN IMPACT ON HOW WE THINK ABOUT DIFFERENT FUCKING GROUPS!
Fuck. Based on comments in this thread, the next time the NAACP complains about how blacks are perceived based on media, we should tell them to shut the fuck up since apparently that can NOT have ANY FUCKING IMPACT on people’s opinions, huh?

For much of America, black America is understood to be that which is shown on the idiot box. While they might have a black friend, they assume that person is an outlier, and that the rest of black America is single mother welfare queen rap singing gang banging cop killing drug dealing criminals. They think that because that is what the idiot box TELLS them to think. That is why they do NOT go into Harlem for dinner (or East Palo Alto, or South Central). When someone DOES go in, and comments that it is just like what they are used to, that is a GOOD THING.
How it was said is stupid as shit, but stating that having dinner in Harlem is just as pleasant has having dinner in the Village is a great step forward. The follow-up should be getting more whites to go to Sylvias.
For that matter, Will Smith got busted for speeding in ‘Parents Just Don’t Understand’ – a rap in which he also takes his parents’ car without permission, drives sans license and picks up an underage girl. Makes you wonder why BillO thinks he’s such a hot role model. (My guess: he doesn’t know ‘The Fresh Prince’ and ‘Will Smith’ are the same guy.)
Well, I’m sure some people would probably say yeah to that (not me). At least around here, I see few people taking the NACCP seriously.
I agree with your overall premise, except I think it’s oversimplistic to blame it on TV. Mainstream opinion about blacks is nothing new. Been going on before 1776, let alone before the advent of TV. So it’s more likely that any ideas that whites have about blacks is simply the product of inherited memes. TV only reinforces what’s already believed.
Even if someone only knew blacks through TV, they shouldn’t go around thinking blacks behave like gansters by default unless they are influenced by something else. Media portrayal of blacks is diverse enough to make this a unreasonable likelihood. Any whites who are really surprised when blacks don’t act like thugs may blame their dumbassity on TV and radio, but I think that’s an excuse. They believe what they believe because they are prejudiced. The TV didn’t make them that way.
I love you guys.
And Ludacris? Every time he shows up for an event he’s so sweet and cute. Could it be that his music is … oh, I don’t know, an act?
Which hip-hop artist was it who talked about taking a shot of cocaine and shooting his woman down?
And which one said, about those who were dissing him, “*f I could strangle these people and not go to hell and get executed … I would – but I can’t.”?
The hip hop artist was Johny Cash.
from Cocaine Blues
OLielly thinks he’s a horrible influence on our young people
Actually, Cocaine Blues was written by TJ Arnall and performed by a host of others before Johnny Cash… It was an adaptation of an earlier song called Little Sadie.[/nitpick]
Good info. I didn’t think Johnny wrote it. I just couldn’t resist the joke and the poke at OLielly
If he criticizes artists for lyrics like that he has to go back a few years and take a swipe at an American Icon like Cash. It only helps point out what an arrogant goof ball he really is.
Johnny Cash also shot a man in Reno just to watch him die, and if he hadn’t shot poor Delia, he’d have had her for his wife.
Ironic, isn’t it? What with avoiding intellectual strain, you’d figure me for a regular O’Reilly viewer. Bill would just tell me the “facts” and I’d “decide” to believe everything he told me - instant political ideology with no heavy lifting on my part. But then that darned sense of honesty kicks in and I remember why I don’t listen to him.
OK, sorry for the Cash hijack, but there’s kind of a parallel between him and today’s rappers…heck I’ll even throw O’Reilly in there for giggles
Johnny Cash has been well known for singing morbid, depressing, and violent songs, and wearing black. A big chunk of his audience didn’t want to see him sing The Green Green Grass of Home, they wanted to see him sing Folsom Prison Blues.
Today’s rappers are in the same boat in that a big chunk of their audience (suburban white boys) expect them to be sporting too much gold, grabbing their crotches, denigrating women and glorifying violence. Some rapper starts wearing suits and crooning smooth r&b, he’s going to lose a chunk of his audience.
People expect Bill O’Reilly to be abrasive, right-wing, and controversial. If he started being Bill Moyers, he’d lose half his audience.
All three know/knew they had to keep playing the fool to stay on the titty of popularity, I think.
However, O’Reilly’s still a dick, anyway.
You know, I frequently sit around the house thinking “Gee, I’d love to go to a black owned restaurant but I’m afraid the black patrons will throw feces at each other and scream for mother fucking iced tea”.
Doesn’t everyone feel this way?
To foster even more controversy: the (a?) guy with whom O’Reilly was eating that night has an article in Time about the quotes.
Of all the things he could have ordered at Sylvia’s he gets meatloaf, yup Bill O’ loves him some soul food.
and ordering a cheeseburger.
CMC fnord!
Bill, coconut shrimp ain’t even “soul food” at Outback Steakhouse!
Juan Williams:
No, he was slammed for saying he was surprised that Sylvia’s wasn’t any different from a whte restaurant. He “couldn’t get over it.”
What a shameless, shuffling Uncle Tom Juan Williams has become. Pathetic.
I’m sad to say that I agree with you. Even with the “Uncle Tom” part. I hardly ever go there with that, but goddamn Juan. God the fuck damn.
I loved Larry Wilmore’s send up of The Visit to Sylvia’s on TDS a few days ago.
Bill is indeed a brainless, racist, misogynist tool. Why he still gets airplay is beyond me (but Rush still does, too).
Sadly, there are still plenty of people out there who are as racist as Bill.
I almost never say it either but Williams has really become a giant suck up for Fox and he didn’t used to be this way.
Ironically, it just occurred to me that the last time I went to a “black-run” restaurant (or at least one that I know was “black-run”— unless they come by my table I typically have no fucking clue what race the owners and manager are) it was almost awkwardly quiet. Where the ambient noise is so low that you feel almost uncomfortable talking at a normal volume. Great soul food, though— and they did serve iced tea, although neither I nor any other customers used profanity while ordering it.
Around here at least, it doesn’t really matter whether it’s black-run or white-run, or whether you’re eating fried chicken, prime rib, Penne alla Bolognese, Tacos de Carne Asada, Mongolian beef, Sukiyaki, Spanakopita, or Saag Paneer, if you poke your head into the kitchen you’ll probably find your food being prepared by Mexicans.
