After reading this link, I was wondering where in the world do you find out information and make these tweaks on the BIOS? Do you have to enter the start-up on boot by holding F1 or what?
And, I’m planning on getting A+ certified, (on my own, no $$$ for classes ) do any of you dopers know any really good sites that will teach me the how-to’s and in’s and out’s of hardware? I can read stuff all day like this page, but if it doesn’t explain how to do it, the information wont stick as well. Thanks alot!
Depends on your system, as the key is determined by the individual vendor. Usually, if you watch closely while the machine boots, the text printed on the screen will tell you what key will bring up the BIOS setup, if pressed before the OS starts loading. If you have your motherboard manual, it should tell you also, as well as providing documentation for the setup program. You don’t want to mess about too much without the motherboard manual - your vendor will probably have docs available for download at their website if you don’t have it. Do that before you start.
There are some good hardware sites out there that will educate you on some of the more esoteric issues. Two very good ones aimed at the general public are http://www.sharkyextreme.com, and http://www.tomshardware.com
Yep. Common keys for BIOS access are F2, Delete, and Insert, or some combination thereof with Shift, Ctrl, or Alt. Check your motherboard manufacturer’s website.
A “boot prompt” (the message that says “Press F2 to access BIOS settings” or whatever) used to be standard, but more and more PCs nowadays have a logo screen that displays over the BIOS and POST message displays, so you can’t always rely on the machine to tell you what keys to push unless you know what keys to push to make the logo go away.
Some BIOSes also have an option to disable the “boot prompt.”
Good luck on your A+ certification. It’s not has hard as it looks.
