I have been thinking about writing this for a few days but now I’m inspired by Beck’s bird seed thread.
I got my wife the bird buddy for Christmas. Ok maybe it was more for me. If you are not familiar it is a bird feeder that contains a camera which sends you videos through Bluetooth and the app. Overall it works very well and I recommend it.
Random thoughts:
I bought a pole with a reverse cone that was supposed to keep the squirrels away. I didn’t. I have videos of a squirrel stealing my food. I was never able to see how he got up there.
I’m hoping for more variety as the weather gets warmer. Currently it’s mostly a grackle buddy.
I did switch the squirrel proof food and it seems to work.
So far this is who has visited:
Squirrel
Common Grackle
Common Starling
Blue Jay
Tufted Titmouse
House Sparrow
Red-Winged Blackbird
House Finch
Northern Cardinal
Some fat Mourning Doves feed on the ground underneath
The oddest bird(I believe) on the bird identifier I got was a Canada Goose.
The time of year is off.
Son-of-a-wrek is on the search to find out if one(or pair) has decided to stay here. That would be phenomenal.
We’ve had a heron pair for a couple years. They were very fun to watch out at the pond. They got used to us being close enough to watch.
We fed the cat fish and the herons loved that feed.
On a regular day I get gnatcatchers, tufted titmouse, chickadees, wrens, vireos. Cardinals and mockingbirds.
American crows and cowbirds and Bluejays are the assholes. Bullies on the playground, if you will.
We have a resident group of crows, I know they are related because a white feather on their wing distinguishes them. They really rule the roost. Very snippy and bossy.
I’ve let them run rampant(not that I know how to discourage them) because I’ve wanted to tame a very young one.
To be my friend. I’d love him forever. Hug him and squeeze him and name him Curiosity.
Alas they avoid me picking them up.
I’ve searched for their nests for years. I ain’t above kidnapping a baby.
I’d love to have one of the camera feeder set ups. I’m looking them up. I want one.
I got one for Christmas, too. I got mostly Northern Cardinals, house finch, purple finch, goldfinch, tufted titmouse (mice?). I use a bird ID app from Cornell University because I was too cheap to pay a monthly subscription fee. A pic from the winter.
