Yes, the 1918 flu was a mutated bird flu. Lots of flu strains that spread across the world come from birds originally. The majority are nowhere near as bad as the 1918 strain. Obviously, it’s not good news that there’s been person-to-person transmission. But it should be pointed out that apparently, everyone that was infected with this new person-to-person version died, so that that particular version died out with them. As of right now, as far as we know, there is no virus out there capable of person-to-person transmission. Of course, if it’s happened once, it’ll probably happen again, but there’s no guarantee.
It’s worrisome, but it’s not time to stock up on plastic and duct tape just yet.
