Surgoshan: I don’t think it would be a good idea to subject our young to policies which do not apply to adults. I think that the mandatory minimum drinking age is far more destructive than it’s being given credit for. I think EVERYONE should be able to vote (yes, vote), drive a car and work. We are telling our kids to act like adults with the assumption that they are not. Some are upset that government welfare programs usurp our ability to help our communities on our own. We are doing the same to our children by asurping their ability to do many things for themselves. This attitude of assumed incompetence is deviously hostile.
Not to tread a fine line, but we could strongly suggest to children to undergo some sort of procedure. That would be their decision, however.
Another of many potential problems is that children may become socialized to view sex as a recreational activity rather than an act of supreme intimacy. Although it’s not any of my business to enforce my values on anyone else, I do believe the world would be a colder, uglier place if not impregnated with moments of love and joy. Without the act of sex as a locus for these ideals, it will be harder to find them than it already is (and that’s really saying something.) It is because of this difficulty that I believe many may miss out on the obvious spiritual beauty. Yes, it is all rather tenuous, but life is an intricate maze balanced on a pin.
Otto: Clearly this wonder drug needs to be developed to not only have no side effects, but also be readily filterable from waste water and so that it breaks down during cooking.
The Ryan: That’s a good point about the number of unplanned vs. planned pregnancies. It’s too bad we don’t have any real numbers.
SouthernXYL: You’ve forgotten to re-enter the number of moms from the first year into the third and fourth year calculations or do they drop out of school and/or stop having sex after having their first baby?
Milossarian: If someone isn’t bright enough to figure out the solution to their infertility in the presented situation, maybe that’s a good thing. You may have guessed it already, but for the record I’m a strong proponent for eugenics. I just don’t know how we can implement a thinning of the heard in an acceptable manner.
Surgoshan: I would not want my child, male or female, to depend on another for birth control. Hell, I don’t even do that. Inertia, “Have you got some protection?” Very sexy girl, “Me? Sure, I’m on the pill. Sure. And I haven’t even forgotten to take it either, not even last Tuesday.” What a nightmare.
