I don’t buy that for a second.
“The Boys of St. Vincent” was shown on TV in Canada.
I’m sorry **BRICKER ** this is in no way a dig at you personally but I’ve read the link and Philip Jenkins is full of shit.
Anyone who try to perpetrate a whitewash by pretending to portray a"dispassionate"account of a so called unreal contemporary fear by the public
is as much a piece of low life filth as the people who actually molest the children.
People like him allow it to carry on and can seemingly assuage their conscience by telling themselves that it is for a greater good,a worldwide organisation devoted to helping people on earth and after death.
i.e.The Holy Roman Catholic Church.
People, whether priests or not,who are accused of kiddy fiddling should be given a scrupuously fair trial and if found innocent should walk away without a stain on their character but if found guilty should be executed there and then as an example to their like minded friends.
Any one who hurts kids are total scum.
Which web site? That has actually been one of the cries of the Far Right within the church since the career of Fr. Geoghan became public knowledge, based on a separate issue that goes back to the 1992 scandal and following synod.
It is the position of a few groups that it was “liberal” seminaries that “fostered” homosexuality and “turned loose” so many pedophiles in the church. (Interestingly, nearly every serial predator that has been publicly identified was ordained in the period before seminaries actually became “liberal,” but that does not get much discussion among those groups.)
There is no question that one segment of the church would very much prefer to turn the issues of sexual abuse into witch hunts for homosexuals. I am hoping that they fail, but I do not know which way the political winds are blowing on the subject within the hierarchy.

Other stories and comments speak of the need to tiptoe around this kind of thinking as it may piss off gay activists, but … there it is.
I wondered if it was the Jeff Mirus site. He and I went a few rounds when he came out espousing some version of Intelligent Design and I challenged him, pointing to the various Vatican offices that have derided it.
I’m also not surprised that the story is quoting Tomasi, who, I believe, was one of the “homosexuals, not pedophiles” gits when this came up in 2003.
Mirus likes to believe that he is defending the “real” church, but while he is not stupid and not as far out as the Pius X people, he is still tilted pretty far out on the Right wing.
Yes, it was the Jeff Mirus site. There’s no use arguing with those people, they have one track minds and welcome opposing views only to argue their ideas all the louder.
Yeah… plus you get to fuck someone. Which is probably the reason you’re raping in the first place.
All sex is also about sex. Further, all sex is not about power. Otherwise you were mostly correct.
I’m sure the likelihood that the bishops and archbishops and cardinals who covered the tracks of the pedophile priests were ordained even earlier, on average, receives even less discussion by these groups.
And (apropos of nothing in tomndebb’s post) it bears repeating: it’s the institutional coverup that made this a Roman Catholic Church problem, not the existence of pedophile priests in and of itself. Every organization has bad apples; it comes down to what the organization does about them once it’s aware of them.

Am I reading this right that the percentage of pedophiles priests is roughly the same as married men within “society” (presumably the American population as a whole? the world population?)
Can one extrapolate from his data what the percentage of pedophile priests is as a percentage of the total Catholic priesthood, as opposed to the entire national population?
Hmmmm. Am I reading that right? If someone knew about this and alerted the cops, parents etc, that peron would be excommunicated?
I’m a simpler person, not especially religious.
I wonder. If a person were to hear about this, since they can’t report it (under threat of excommunication), then would it be OK to shoot the sumbitch instead, thereby saving one’s soul (avoiding excommunication)?
Gotta wonder.
Use a longer nail and leave the sharp side out. Or better yet, use a lag screw.
Update:
Lahey has plead guilty to one count of possession of child pornography. He awaits sentencing.
So one month he apologized on behalf of the church for decades of child abuse by church authorities, and the next month he was arrested, and now convicted, for possessing child porn that he was bringing into the country.
What is the sound of…oh, never mind.
588 photos and 33 videos, and he only gets one count?
When will this unfair persecution of Christians ever end?
Time served and probation.
Formally, 15 months plus two years probation, less two months for each month in jail since last May.
He led the RC church in settling a multi-million dollar class action arising from priests buggering children for decades, but five days after the court approved the settlement, he was nabbed trying to bring hundreds of child porn photos and dozens of child porn videos into the country on his laptop.
I do not belive that the punishment was anywhere near severe enough.
At least if he apologizes again, we know he’s probably got something new stashed on his computer
