Bishop Rimbo . . . I never knew

After reading this article in the local paper, I’m mightily impressed by the Bishop of the Southeast Michigan Synod of the ELCA, Bob Rimbo. My Bishop.

Too bad my newfound respect for him comes just as he’s leaving town for a new gig.

I figured him for just another mid-level church functionary. Heard him preach a couple of times - not too shabby, if I recall, but not so overpowering that I remember anything specific.

Only now do I read:

Among the major Lutheran denominations in the United States, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has been the most outspoken in combating anti-Semitism and working with Jewish groups.

“Now, we need to build more relationships with Muslims, too,” Rimbo said. And, he added, “We need to be even more active in reaching out to the gay and lesbian community.”

and:

Rimbo is a nationally known advocate in his denomination for blessing gay couples and opening up all levels of church leadership to gay people.

Bobby, I hardly knew ye . . . but that’s my fault.
