It’s been funny, after eight years of conservatives claiming that Obama’s fans called him “The One*” (a notion I only heard from conservatives; I guess it’s one of those stories they told each other), they swallowed Trump’s “I alone can fix it” without a hiccup. There was one speech he made during the fall where he basically promised to make his supporters’ every dream come true. How fucking messianic can you get?
I’ll mention one more time that there has been, in my lifetime, one Presidential candidate whose campaign did in fact call him “The One.” That was Nixon, of all people. “Nixon’s The One” was his campaign slogan. There was even a song that went with it:
Nixon’s the one, Nixon’s the one,
Nixon’s the one for me,
We believe in Nixon, N-I-X-O-N,
Nixon’s the one for me.*
Some of the example that Iggy cites may be people having a little ironic fun with the already established meme. But, at least he’s bringing something to the conversation as opposed to mere dickishness.
He even said once that his campaign “will be a journey to Heaven because we will help so many people.” And “I take all of these slings and arrows gladly for you. I take them for our movement so that we can have our country back.” Shedding his blood so that we might be able to make it to heaven.
To be clear, the “he” referred to is Donald Trump.
According to this transcript at NPR, Trump uttered those statements during a speech to refute assault allegations. The report is time stamped on October 13, 2016.
Other news agencies reporting on the speech provide a dateline of West Palm Beach and Trump mentions being in Florida.
I didn’t take the time to watch the video, but presuming NPR is faithfully transcribing the speech you can watch The Donald say it himself.
Oops. Completed post too soon and ran out of edit time…
The Bible does mention in various verses both slings or arrows, but not in that combination of phrase we are familiar with and which Trump said. That seems to be Shakespeare’s own wording in the nunnery scene of Hamlet, Act III, Scene 1 during the famous “To be, or not to be” soliloquy. So the imagery of shedding blood might be considered as a metaphor for Christ but the words used are not biblical or those typically referencing Jesus.
The full heaven quote is:
Again, references to religious matters are plain. Though in describing himself as on a journey to heaven and helping others one might consider this an allusion to Christ, it could equally be an allusion to any of the followers of Jesus who were given the Great Commission to “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”(Mark 16:15, King James Version)
I’m old enough to remember when Jacqueline Kennedy was First Lady, and how beautiful she was. (Hell, the whole world pretty much had a crush on her back then.) But given a choice between Jackie Kennedy ca. 1962 and Michelle Obama now, I’d take Michelle.
Deficit is not the same as debt.
If you have a credit card that you charge 3000 on the first year, 2000 the next, 1000 the third, you have decreased your deficit each year while debt still grows.
Unemployment dropped below 8% for the first time in Sept. 2012, hit 8% again for the month of Jan 2013 and from there dropped steadily for the rest of his time in office, ending at 4.8%.
Fast and Furious was started by Bush.
I expect the rest of the list to be equally inaccurate and misleading or distorted.
I’m surprised there was no mention of Obamaphones.
It’s pretty amusing when a “fact check” starts with an elementary mistake or redirection such as this. The deficit rose to $1.4B in Bush’s final year and is somewhere around $500M for the past couple of years. (For most of Bush’s term, though, the numbers were better.)
But, anyway, it matters not. Let’s just keep track of the numbers now and see how Trump compares come next election time. No matter the results, I’m sure it’ll either be “Trump is great!” if it goes well or “It’s Obama’s fault” if it grows.
I know! Bush got several thousand Americans killed for nothing, while Obama’s body count is TINY compared to that. In terms of getting Americans killed for nothing, I’d also give Obama a solid F.
