Black Men drinking White Wine

I’ve never disagreed with this part. The disagreement, as I’m sure is clear to everyone by now, was that your question seemed to rely on the premise that drinking white wine is a white people thing. And of course, as you mentioned, my contention that it is not, is based entirely on my personal experiences. YMM --and apparently does-- V.

Tell your friend I think he’s hot.

Maybe they were drinking watermelon wine.

::titters::

Women be shoppin’.

Hey, no worries Juggernaut. Tell your friend I said black pussies are bad luck and he shouldn’t let one cross his path.

Does that actually exist?

I’m not sure about commercially, but you can make wine out of pretty much any fruit.

A friend recently picked up some kosher Croatian cherry wine for me, out of curiosity ( my father’s side of the family is from Croatia and he has a Jewish background ). I’m not I’d recommend it even as a dessert wine unless you’re fond of very sweet cherry sucret-flavored booze. But It wasn’t so vile as to be undrinkable.

ETA: By the way via this gift I discovered the original origin of maraschino cherries. Very interesting.

Coincidentally, my wife pointed out a bottle of watermelon wine at the liquor store the other day. So the answer is yes.

The wine was from a local winery. I live in rural Illinois. The only other wine I’ve had from said winery was horrible, probably the only red wine I’ve ever found undrinkable. Tasted something like slightly off brut Champagne with a splash of concord grape juice and then watered down.

Yep. Pretty much anything with sugar you can turn into wine. And if there’s not enough sugar, you can always add sugar. Cherry wine can be absolutely dry, if you’d like. Unless you forcibly stop the fermentation at some point to leave residual sweetness, cherry juice should ferment bone dry. Usually, what people do for sweet wines is backsweeten them after fermenting it out and killing the yeast.

Boone’s Farm makes a watermelon, probably similar brands do as well.

That is genius. Tell me you made that up. Wait…don’t. I already be dickridin’ too hard.

That reminds me. A thousand years ago my boyfriend was a Guatemalan/whiteish guy who had a black cat. Yes, there were black pussy jokes galore. They never got old, by which I mean they got old very quickly.

I’m getting conflicting information on the internet about what exactly Boone’s Farm is (Wikipedia says all current Boones Farms are malt beverages. Other sources say they’re flavored apple wine product. I don’t know for sure.) At any rate, their watermelon wine is either apple wine or a malt beverage flavored with watermelon. So it’s not a “true” watermelon wine, if that’s important to you.

This is my second-favorite SDMB thread ever, only second to that one by the dude who bought a blimp and it went amok in his house one night.

This thread is the goodiest in a while.

The black guys I’ve served with in the Navy wouldn’t be caught dead drinking white wine, especially in front of other guys. Lile most guys, they will drink whatever a chick wants if they are trying to get laid. Other than that exception, no way a self respecting military brother is sipping zinfandel. No. Fucking. Way.

Damn straight!

My vote goes to the P Diddy/white party thang. Plus, like you said, if cat piss got them the draws, that’s what they’d be drinking.

[nitpick]
Zinfandel is a red wine. And a very good grape for a red wine, at that. Don’t let associations with white zin fool you. Zinfandels can be phenomenal, deep, rich, and complex wines.

White zinfindel is a blush/rosé wine.

Even most Jews can’t stand syrupy, sweet wines, despite their being an integral part of the culture. They’re the butt of a lot of jokes. Why drink them, then? Tradition! Seriously. If you’re Jewish, you keep a bottle of Manichewitz, Kedem or Mogen David around because it’s expected, especially for holidays. Even though there’s much better kosher wines now, Passover wouldn’t be the same without some Manichewitz.

Yup. Oops. Thinking Chardonnay, wrote zin.

Speaking of Manichewitz, that store I used to work in carried it in huge 1.75L jugs. Who bought it? Mainly older Dominicans, both male and female.

We also sold Caballo Blanco which I’ve never tried but it labeled as a sweet red wine, so I guess the Manichewitz is similar. That only came in a .750 size, so for those Sunday evening get the whole family together events that wouldn’t serve everyone.

The store is staffed mainly by people from the DR - heck, I was the only person who worked there born in the U.S. They told me they also drink red wine mixed with Coke - there is definitely a tradition of drinking sweet things where they are from. Totally unsurprising when you are talking about the cuisine and drink of a region where sugar is grown.

My very favorite thing they told me about is mamajuana, which I would totally try. Supposedly the ready to drink store bought version kinda sucks - like sangria, you need it made from scratch… and like sangria, everyone there had their own family’s special recipe for it.

Remember this song:

We don’t have to take our clothes off
to have a good time, oh no…
We could dance and party all night
and drink some cherry wine, uh huh…
